TVs in the tube...

I hate to be the cynic, but wont overhead projectors simply make the tube even hotter than it already is? As fancy as it sounds, when in Munich I saw an advert that travelled along the tunnel at the same pace as the train... dam that Germany innovation!

surely as a train goes past the the ad will then be projected onto the train and could annoy/distract people on the train

this would not happen, I have seen some pictures of it being tested at a disused underground station, from what understood the projectors would go off in a wave as the train entered the station, and then switched on again in sequence to follow the train to the end of the platform.

How can it be good news for the passenger?

We already get too much advertising - most of it lies and exageration.

More advertising income meaning less income required from passengers meaning lower ticket prices, or postponement of increases?

its not more advertising though really is it? it will only replace posters where they are, they couldn't fit anymore in.

Interesting about them switching off as a train arrives

Surely they'll charge more for advertising on a high tech all singing, all dancing screen than just a few posters.

yeah but that could be to cover the price of the projectors, meaning the actual income to LU/LT/whoever is just the same??
In german the word for boiler is exactly the same as that for kettle... Now what does that tell you about steam locos?

Come on, :P
You can't really be that bothered about more advertising?
It's hardly a big matter!
It must pay for something, whether that is the workers income or extra services!

The ones in Munich (they now have them in both directions between Karlsplatz and Marienplatz on the S-bahn) only work when the train reaches a certain speed, and does not cope with speed changes of the train too well. They do catch the eye though, so probably work well for the advertisers. The first advert they had, for a DSL ISP called 'Alice' was quite good, with Alice running alongside the train, but the current adverts are pretty boring, not making good use of animation.

On the U-bahn, one train was fitted with flat TV screens a couple of years ago, for showing news headlines and adverts, but I have never seen them in operation. Not sure the experiment was a success.

Some of the main U-bahn stations have projector displays showing adverts, news, weather and very short cartoons. These help to pass the time waiting for the next train.
