3D Canvas announcement

The Rail Simulator forum was very busy leading up to the UK release on October 12th 2007, this is a read-only copy of those discussions for historic and review purposes.

If this is to the exclusion of the others, in my case TSM, then it is bad news and I shall not be buying.

If I cannot get my old head around 3D Canvas, or GMax for that matter, for MSTS, then I certainly won't for KRS.

The problem with TSM is that it's not supported anymore as far as I am aware - Amabilis will be putting the effort in to making it compatible and/or have done so by virtue of a good plug-in facility that someone is writing a plug-in with. TSM has no plug-in facility at all and is very much bespoke for building MSTS models.

I'm sure if someone can convince Abacus to get involved then there won't be a problem...

Is this a good time to request that the more capable among us hold a few workshops in using 3d canvas?

I, for one, would be happy to attend.

I'm perfectly willing (space permitting) to take anyone through the basics of 3DCanvas at any of the UKTS roadshows.....

I'll be at Leytonstone tomorrow...

Thank you, Kuju, for making this annoncement. It is good to know what software we will need to build for the upcoming sim.

However, I feel the need to voice a note of caution. Like many other moddelers out there, I have used other tools to build models (in my case, GMax). Whilst I am happy to learn to use these new tools (I'm downloading it at the moment), I am worried about my back catalogue of models, some of which I have only just completed. The more recent ones have a very high amount of detail in them which took many hours to create, and many more to recreate using this new software. What wories me is that many of our keenest modellers may be tempted away by the lure of TMTS, which has already shown its' capability of converting existing MSTS models to their native format.

What I, and I assume many others, would like to hear would be the announcement of either a tool to either convert MSTS .s files to KRS format, or for some sort of backward-compatability. It's not that I am lazy or like making things difficult for the nice people at Kuju, it's just that, like many others, I have spent a significant amount of (often unrewarded) time building these models, and would like to be able to use them in this great-looking new sim.

Thanks for listening. No matter what the outcome, I look forward to this sim.

Regards,

I very much doubt that Kuju will produce a tool to convert .s files to the KRS format, as it would open up the dodgy area of copyright violation.

And I have a feeling that TMTS will refrain from doing the same...or at least making a converter available for public use.

I imagine that's a valid concern but I believe that 3DC is versatile enough to import 3ds files. I don't know how difficult it will be to reapply textures but at least most of the older content made with Gmax should be convertable to KRS to a greater or lesser degree.

If I remember correct MSTS stuff will not be comtiable or convert to KRS file formats since its a whole new sim with new code structure.

A basic conversion of MSTS models shouldn't be too difficult to write if Kuju publish their file formats. ;)
