Lighting FX

The Rail Simulator forum was very busy leading up to the UK release on October 12th 2007, this is a read-only copy of those discussions for historic and review purposes.

Lighting FX

Post by TheTazman »

I have just been playing MSTS and as most of you have probably noticed if a train passes say a street light for example, the light does not shine onto the train.

With the new graphics engine thats is being used on Rail Sim, will objects light up if light shines onto them.

And I would higly recommend implementation of High-Dynamic Range Lighting (HDR), which would make simulation much more realistic. HDR is probably not very difficult to implement (many games nowadays have it), but is quite demanding for graphic cards. So this would be optional.

Try to imagine driving with Black 5 out of a dark tunnel into the brilliant sunny morning, when you are blinded with glare of the sun. 8)

Hmm, I think that you completely underestimate the complexity to create a decent, fast rendering engine incorporating all the nice features modern graphic cards provide. HDR for example seems to require to handle textures and other pixmaps as floating point values instead of byte values. This could require a lot of changes to existing rendering engines.

I have only just finished playing NFSMW 2 on my PC. That had some very good sun effects and you could drive into the sun and not see properly (very nice). Not sure if thats HDR tho. I must compliment the work that went into NFSMW as the world was huge and ran extremely well on my not all that powerful PC.

Yep, Need For Speed Most Wanted for all the consoles (although it looks best ont he Xbox 360) makes perfect use of this lighting system. It looks very cool coming out of a tunnel and then there is a short glare before the lighting goes back to normal. It's very realistic and it looks judging by the shots of the HST that they just might be using a similar system. 8)

The shots of the HST remind me very much of NFSMW for Xbox 360, the glare, the amount of detail...I wouldn't mind if there was a console version. I'm wondering if EA has anything to do with this? They did produce NFSMW so I wouldn't be shocked after seeing that if Rail Sim looks just as good.

It would be nice if Kuju could show us a sample of some signals. acutally come to think of it it would be cool if we could see some semaphore (think thats the spelling) and some modern lit ones. The screen shots that have been released so far do not show any signals at all. Not even the one where the guy is looking at his watch.
