Farnham - Oxford

Post by djhedge »

On Thursday I have to be in Oxford for 9AM

From Farnham I have two choices:

1. Farnham - Woking
Woking - Basingstoke
Basingstoke - Oxford

2. Farnham - Aldershot
Aldershot - Ash
Ash - Reading
Reading - Oxford

Apparently either way takes 2 hours - any suggestions which I should go for?

Possibly the second one - relying on VXC services from Bournemouth (which is what the Basingstoke to Oxford would be) is always a bad plan if you need punctuality.

Good point - South West Trains have got alot better lately - perhaps that might be the best bet! Punctuality takes priority here.

North bound is usualy ok, south usualy has the delays on, but with the slack in the timetable, the time is usualy made up.

Another option mixing the two.

Farnham - Woking
Woking - Guildford
Guildford - Reading (First Great Western Link)
Reading - Oxford

When I got to Guildford I usually change at Aldershot, as the train leaves four minutes after the inbound from Farnham arrives.

The other option (and the one I always use) is
Farnham-Ash Vale
Ash Vale - North Camp (10-15min walk)
North Camp - Reading
Reading - Oxford

Takes about 2 hours as well, but less actual changes.
I'm not sure the via Woking and Basingstoke route is valid, you may need to check.

Well the trip looms tomorrow :D

I have decided to "play it by ear" and see which route I take on the morning.

Tomorrow Evening I will post the result :D! Cheers for all the suggestions!

Well I cheated!

I got a lift to North Camp for the 0756, and changed at Reading for the 0815 arriving into oxford just before 9AM!

Nailing it in under an hour :D!
