A Southwold Upgrade...

Post by pitleyfalley »

Heya Guys,

Over the last year or so, mainly when the WHR was driving me totally mad, I did bits of work on Southwold as way of a bit of a change, slowly upgrading the route to something more acceptable by todays standards... Well find below a few shots of the route as it stands at the moment, section one, Southwold to Blythburgh... The route doesnt look too different however a lot of the forests have been replaced with .dat files, the town of Southwold has been substantially rebuilt, and the harbour branch line (not shown in these shots) has been much modified. Ive no plans to release this for the time being, partly as a number of files need replacing in the wake of 06/01 and partly as there is a lot more to do.

Many of you may recall that Southwold front couplers didnt work too well in version 1 of the route, well this is in the process of being rectified and realistic physics being applied thanks to Portbury. Likewise not shown is the increase in sound effects applied to the route. However Ive still got a lot to do on this front. This is set one of the screenshots, set two to come sometime in the future.

NB: Some of the shots show different previews (Talyllyn ones!) however seem to load the right shots in the preview mode!

So enlighten me please, how do .dat files work instead of forests?

As one who prefers shortlines and narrow gauge, Southwold has been one of my favorite routes ever since downloading it more than a year ago. A new and improved version is quite exciting.

The spur leading to the dock was not much exploited either visually or with activities. I'd definitely like to see more development there.

Lamps on the rear of the locos! I remember one activity included night driving in both directions.

A complete revision and error correction for the activities and rolling stock. As I remember half the activites were written for carriages with different names and it was the devil to sort out.

Since passengers can only enter and exit from one side of the carriages, some of the original activities turned them only to have their wheels rolling backward!

The original route is so relaxing to run, I can't wait for the new sounds along the way.

Hi Chris

I have yet to download the route, but its on my list. It looks great and these improvements will make it better I am sure. Dont put too many of those traction engines in though, or we will all run late from slowing down to watch them

Heya guys,

Thanks for the comments, the harbour branch line has been totally redone... shots to follow of it soon. All ive done with the traction enignes is replaced the orignal ones, taken them out and popped some new ones in in different places.

The threshing machine, rack bench and plough look excellent, have a clover huller sat in the yard somewhere needing restoring, (maybe a project for once we've got the traction engine done!)... did you ever complete the model of the roller which you were doing?

More shots to come soon guys, I plan on changing the activites quite a lot to be honest, when the route got shown at Warley some time ago Saddletank had created some fairly freelance activities which I plan on creating a few more of for version 2. Sort of a bit more relaxed with rolling stock lying around a few challenges to keep people amused; the original ones we're written in a bit of a rush so we're never too good to be honest! The rolling stock should now be sorted and the _ issue resolved with that. As for the carriages wheels I think we sorted that out aswell.

Ill try and get a few more shots uploaded over the weekend guys....

Regards Chris

The roller is complete (the wheels are now much better) along with a Fowler traction engine, based on 13140 Volunteer (iin the saw bench pic). As you can see with the sawbench pic there is a bowser now complete. I hope to have enough items for a release soon. This should hopefully also include a portable, a timber trailer and possibly a Tasker chain drive tractor.

Nobody answered Martin's query about .dat files! I imagined it was because the file contained a number of trees instead of a lot of files of single trees - but Hey! I may be wrong.

based on 13140 Volunteer
As owned by Mr Dave Freemantle, a good freind of mine. Spent bits of last year crewing for him! That engine flies on the road. I recall at one rally in Basingstoke racing Dave and our engines up Basingstoke ring road after an evening in the pub, much to the amusement of various people watching, and to the annoyance of the boy racers trying to get past us!

You should have heard it last year when we chained it up to a 50 ton tractor sledge at Hamptworth Rally... was fantastic fun and with the aid of a bag of sawdust created some rather nice pyrotechnics up the sledge course!
