The Ffestiniog Railway and crossing the new bypass
Hi,
I know this is not realy a narrow gauge priority and the desision has already been made but i thought it would be interesting to find out how you would like the crossing/tunnel/bridge to be.
Cheers,
William
P.S. The desicion that has been made is for the road to go under the railway.

Well it needs to for the WHR to connect to Porthmadog really (not that i want this 2 happen
), but it also matters to the people who live in the area as Port gets so congested with traffic in the summer & the WHR will NOT help that.

At he end of the day, once the WHR opens up through pass. numbers on the FR will drop - not more people come to the area. William - you can just go to Porthmadog by train

If they did choose a crossing, I would like a gated crossing, not one of these new lowering barrier ones

It would have to be barrier crossings unfortunately I guess, especially on a bypass

I can't see the bypass happening somehow! I think the planners will go for the cheap option at Port... 10 new mini roundabouts, speed ramps everywhere and a new one-way system! All this will appear over night just to totally confuse all the residents!
I voted for the tunnel, it has to be whatever that is best for the FR I supose

Going over is the cheap option, and won't mean the Ffestiniog is closed for extended periods while the work is done - although admittedly if done as a Bridge Slide, the work could take as little as 72 hours - take the new bridge over the CTRL at Ebsfleet. Level Crossings are to be avoided at all cost - recent history suggests that they are probably the most dangerous form of road/rail crossing.
However, it calls into question wider issues (outside that of this sub-forum) about the sustainability of road and rail services, the planned ERTMS fitment on the Cambrian, and any possible enhancements. In summary, a bypass will only increase the demand for travel - plenty of studies exist to show this phenomenon with road building. A bypass will possibly undermine ATW's efforts on the Cambrian, and reduce the potential benefits of the ERTMS fitment.

Is the bypass planned as a dual carriageway? Don't think I've ever heard of a level crossing on a dual carriageway, but I'm sure someone can prove me wrongLevel Crossings are to be avoided at all cost - recent history suggests that they are probably the most dangerous form of road/rail crossing.
I'm pretty sure HMRI have said that they will not approve any new level crossings anyway.

The A483 near Oswestry is crossed twice by a military railway, and that road is a very busy duel carriage way, although very little travels down the branch

Bridge of some sort I suppose. Not really too fussed. Bypass is just going to bring more people into the area, but hey I suppose it will stop some of the through traffic.
William.. stop being so anti WHR! Why the bad attitude to it all of a sudden?
Still dont see why people have to like one railway or the other (and yes I know there's far more too it than that)

I'm just a purist. You may have noticed the atitude of a lot of FR supporters is against the WHR (C), i don't mind the WHR (P) they rock. But i don't think the WHR (C) aproach is very heritage.

Well the WHR(C) cant go very heritage, as there is only Russell left from the original fleet, and there are few engines that can do the entire lenght of the route, apart from the Ffestiniog ones.
So in my opinion, the WHR(C) thought too them selves 'what can we do interesting', and the answer was garrats
But who knows, one day in the future they may build some WHR replicas, you bever know
