I thought it quite good so I sent them an e-mail enquiring about the Brighton to Victoria route and the Thameslink (Bedford to Brighton route).

I am interested in purchasing either the Brighton – Victoria CD or the Thameslink, Bedford - Brighton CD.

I have downloaded the demo video clips (and I was quite impressed), however I would like to see some screen shots or video clips from the Brighton – Victoria CD and the Thameslink, Bedford - Brighton CD.

Please could you send them to me – if it’s possible?

You can drive anything you want on them, there’s loads of different types of traction included.

Well, funnily enough I was given a copy of the CD ages ago and have never even taken it out of the soft case it came in. It caught my eye just this morning, lieing forlornly in the boot of my car where i suspect it has lain for many a year.

Im in Worthing too Callum, so if you and your Dad (or Mum) want to meet somewhere in town i'll happily lend you my copy so you can see what its like. Or they can come and collect it if they prefer - im in Durrington. Drop me a PM and we'll sort something out.

After i wrote the above I decided to nip out to the car and get the disc to see what it was like. Unfortunately it appears to be a blank CD. Despite the wallet being labelled CabView Driver it doesn't appear to have any files on it at all. Certainly it doesn't play in any of my drives

So it looks like I'll have to say sorry after all.

I hope you manage to get a working copy from somewhere.

I've got the Paddington to Bristol version, and unfortunately, it's not very good. It has a basic bitmap of a cab view, and the route itself is just taken from a video, so when a line speed it goes at the correct frame rate, when it goes slower, the frame rate of the same video is very slow (1 frame per 5 seconds at some slow speeds!), so I would stick with MSTS no question.

I have a few CabView routes - to be honest, before MSTS they were pretty much the best thing out there but they don't match the immersion of MSTS as there are no external views. This is because the visuals are taken from Cab View videos with a superimposed 'cab view' for your controls etc. I really enjoyed them though, but I don't use them anymore now MSTS is here and especially when the new sims come through!

You can choose varying traction and consists but the only difference is that the power/weight ratios correspond to the new traction etc.

One of the routes I have is the Euston - somewhere up the WCML (I forget). It's great but as you go past the Wembley yard, the camera swings over to scan the stock in the sidings - presumably because this is what happened on the original cab view video. In addition, the passing traffic is just whatever was on the video, so you get used to passing the same 4-Cig as you exit Brighton etc etc.

Pretty neat idea though - when you consider that before this, the only other train sim was Evening Star / Southern Belle on the Speccy (speaking of which, Ashley Greenup wrote plenty of sig/sim software for the Spectrum!)

I thought that must happen to the framerates, if its just a video!
And I noticed the cabs look a bit ( )

You forgot the TrainDriver series by Paul Robins on the Amiga, as well as Densya De Go. (Got the lot )

Anyway, back on topic:
I don't think they're bad, especially as if you are running at the correct speed, the vid should also be at the correct speed
Maybe worth it if the route isn't available in MSTS, but otherwise not really.

Hi,

The thing that made me interested was, that instead of made up graphics, you have real footage - which I thought looks much more realistic.

Its a shame someone can't make a new sim, that works really well; with realistic cabs and sounds and video footage which works well with the train speed ect.

It seems like a good idea, but I don't think its going to happen.
