What's The Deal With this???

When I installed MSTS I had to register, no big deal, but when I was forced by user ignorance to re-install I had to register again. Okay, no problem ...... except ...... my version is already 1.2 out of the box, yet I am forced to download that upgrade each time otherwise the registration process fails!!!!!!

Also, even though one has carried out the upgrade, if you re-register the same nonsense happens all over again.

If you don't register, you have the dreaded CD problem!!!!!!!

Okay ... I'm not a newbie at this. I back up ALL my software, as is my legal right. 43 Microsoft lawyers (can you believe that?) are not going to stop me backing up my software! I have MSTS backed up to DVD Ram and CAN avoid their lousy registration process. I don't make illegal copies, I simply back up my original discs. :) Before anyone argues this, it is perfectly legal to back up your software. Having said that, why do I get the feeling someone WILL argue it? LOL

Just making the point that I feel Microsoft are really over the top with this, anyone else agree?

Have you all backed up your copies of MSTS?

Won't get much disagreement in criticising MS anywhere :)

You may find that you cannot backup MSTS bnecause of built in blocking arrangements. If so, installing Clone CD allows copying, though it will teke a lot longer. Although you need to pay for Clone CD , you can evaluate for a short time for free

I don't remember ever having to register MSTS when its installed, and I did it a few weeks ago.

Hi Tony!

Er ... yes ..... but that sort of software problem I overcame a LONG time ago. No ... you are right, you cannot back up MSTS. Well .... you can if you know how to ...... :) :)

Classic case of those that can .... do .........

Same here ......... but it will ask you to register if you reinstall it! In fact, it will insist, or force you to play from the CD until you do. I think everyone knows this.

I think it must depend on what version or age disc you have. I bought mine on a preorder when it was first announced all those years ago. I had to reinstall it recently following a HD crash (thanks trojan writers) and i didnt have to register it, nor do i have to leave a disk in the cd drive.

I think maybe its only later editions since Microsoft have got twitchy about software piracy that has these restrictions.

Yep ..... seems you are right on this one. My Copy is only a month old, and the copy protection was a veritable Fort Knox. LOL

I'm old fashioned, I understad fully the need to protect software, but by the same token, if I buy something I OWN it!!!!!

What is that old saying? "Posession is nine tenths of the law."

With MS ..... it's that leftover tenth you have to worry about!

43 lawyers for one case? I'm going to say that all day, because it is so perfectly obscene. Especially as they lost .......... :) :)

Maybe there is hope for the little guy after all!

Everyone except me then, as it was only a couple of weeks ago, and I can absolutely 100% say they you do not need to enter any serial number, or any online registration to install or reinstall the game.

I suspect this is the actual difference, the new version may well be different to the older version.
The original version does not require it.

Curious ........

No ... I've never heard of a serial number being required.

However .. I had to get a net passport before I could even proceed with the registration.

That ... IS ridiculous!!!

Just tried a reinstall ....... for fun, on the original installation I now no longer need.

Yep ....... can only play from the CD unless I register. Just deleted that installation, the most fun I have had in a long while .... :) :)

I HATE ANYTHING fooling around with my registry! Won't tolerate that sort of thing on my PC. Nice little area where all sorts of nasties like to lurk .... LOL

I have NEVER heard of that. I always undestood that the 1.2 CD required a / the CD in the drive to play, but if you installed the 1.2 patch you did not need a CD in the drive.

You'll not have installed much on your PC then, because theres rather a lot of applications which use the registry for something or other.
We use the registry in the LSE install.

Er ..... that's what I said .... but obviously I worded it badly. :) You have to play from the CD until you register ... yes .. that was what I said:)

As for the registry thing, I think you misunderstood me. I said I dislike things fooling around in there, by that ....... I meant problematical items, not sweet, everyday "I behave myself" beasties. :) I Took a dislike to MSTS being in there and using itself to make my life an irritation. That's easy to understand, isn't it? :)

As is MS and their security phobia easy to understand. I don't know the facts of this, but I would imagine their software is pirated the most. :)

However, all a bit off topic, my original question was "Do you back up your MSTS CD's?"

If I had not overcome the problem, seems I would have been better off with an original copy from a few years ago. :)
