Quick update - the route has now been accepted on to the Auran Download station so also available on there if anyone's interested.

The CD service was the same as my MSTS routes, "at cost", i.e. non commercial work. However for some reason, the mods over there decided the initial announcement belonged in the Payware section, not freeware. The Download Station is free (with a 4 k/s cap if you don't have an Auran First Class ticket). The individual concerned has a known history of criticising CD distribution - I believe he had a go on here a few times about the same thing. I respect that the Trainz culture is a bit different but I do sniff overtones of "MSTS user, not welcome here", from a few of the sentiments not just on that thread but others previously which the moderators had to clean up.
Had I known Auran would agree to host the wretched thing then I would probably have waited and put the two methods out side by side, but what's done is done, c'est la vie etc.
It certainly doesn't encourage people to get involved with Trainz and I'm seriously thinking whether I want anything more to do with it.

Well I have made my decision not to have anything further to do with Trainz. GTA San Andreas has just arrived (together with a certain mod lying in the Download folder
) and having a crack at that is far more compelling than spending another thankless 3 months in Surveyor.
As I posted on the Trainz forum and my news page today, maybe it is time to re-assess whether the "little guy" producing routes etc. in his spare time is a viable proposition anymore. Back in the pre MSTS and Trainz days things were much simpler and any attempt at putting out a route was usually eagerly awaited and well received unless you made a complete botch of it. There seems to be an ever higher expectation for standards these days which are impossible for the average user to achieve. I doubt it is going to get much better under TMTS and KRS as users will demand even higher standards with the poor sap making the route expected to do it for free and getting nothing in return but grief. The trend actually started a bit with BVE as a number of contributors from the early days got disillusioned with negative feedback not only for something done for nothing but which they had to host often at their own expense.
Anyhow, I'm off for some "Hot Coffee", if you know what I mean...

I don't blame Vern for not wanting anything else to do with Trainz.
I have also seen the comments and think the same as the rest of you.
I really do believe some people just spend hours looking for all the faults and not actually driving the route.
I have been working on some real schedules for the route and time keeping wise it works very well, however i will not be putting these on the download station because people will most probably find faults with them.
I thank Vern very much for all he has done for various train sims and hope that we see more of his work maybe for other sims in the future.
Hope you have fun with GTA San Andreas, I have only got it for the PS2 so have not seen a hot coffe cup yet

Well if you get bored of shooting things theres already rail3d...! (Maybe I'll stop one day, lol!)
My latest fictional map looks something like this (cue huge image):

I'm still in the process of track laying.
If you were to think about modelling something I'd recommend a real line. Rail3d is setup to create real layouts much easier - you can trace the railway lines from maps (inc. OS maps which you can download from their site); and import the terrain using DEM data.
Edit: If you want to imagine scale it takes just about 2 hours for a 75000 4MT + 7Mk1s to do a stopping service between Minehead and Paignton. I'm adding a few services at the moment so I needed to get the timetable accurate!

Sad to see that Vern has packed it in completely.

The Trainsim UK project has been concluded and the web site shut down.
I would like to thank all those who have supported the project over the last six and a half years. However in recent months I have found it hard to find much enthusiasm for the hobby - the site achieved what it set out to do and I had already planned to wind things up next March when the hosting fell due for renewal. Recent events on the Trainz forum have shown the community spirit that existed in those early days has been replaced...by something else and hastened my decision. I know it's only a small minority but once the well has been poisoned, the water is unlikely to run clean again. My heart is not in it anymore.
I wish the developers of the new sims good luck (you're going to need it!) with their efforts but I'm unlikely to play an active part either in the run-up to release or development of content afterwards.
Best wishes to everyone for the future.

Speaking as one who has worked with Vern in the past, and surveyed a good deal of the Cambrian with him on our field trip, this is a sad day for train simulation. He has supported all types of home computer train simulation products for years, and was involved (and has been again) with Kuju in the pre-release stage of MSTS back in the day.
It is a great pity that a couple of small minded xenophobic morons can do this.

Yes it is a shame. I remember Vern's site as one of the first I found when I first got interested in Rail sims about 6 years ago (was it really so long ago?!).
I suppose I'm lucky, as Rail3d isn't a particularly popular sim anymore I don't get the grief. There's 800 or so people read the yahoogroup but only about 20 actually post on a regular basis.
You may notice the map above getting bigger. And bigger.
