Munich S-Bahn and U-Bahn

A message to Ian Morgan really - I've just spent three days in MÃ¼nchen and marvelled at the new red Alsthom S-Bahn Trains - beautifully smooth, although the traction motors make a bit of a whine but much better than the old white and orange striped ones that seem to be disappearing rather fast

Plenty of both around at the moment, never know what sort I will be on next. The nice thing about the new ones is the view over the driver's shoulder, if he has not pulled his curtain down

These are the 4-car class 423 units, but there are 3 and 2 car units too.

I was on business with colleagues so it would have been difficult to slope off...

Had a great night though in the Weisses Brauhaus in the MarienPlatz with a Dutchman and a German - you can't beat half a pig on a plate with sauerkraut, kartoffeln and plenty of Pilsener Beer (can't stand Weiss Bier)!

Was very nearly caught out by the MVV very early this morning at Ostbahnhoff - got on the back end of an S8 train at Rosenheimer Platz and then sat for 2 or 3 minutes in an emty carriage at Ostbahnhoff before realising everyone else had got off and jumped on the front half (didn't understand the garbled German announcement) - just made it into the front half before it pulled away toward the airport leaving the back half sat in the station!!!

Oops - yes, you can find yourself in the carriage sheds like that. Actually, they had an open day there a couple of weeks ago, 30th birthday of the S-bahn. And yes, nothing like a Haxe and chips

I'd be impressed if someone could produce an MSTS route including all that track and sidings to the west of Ostbahnhof - it was quite nice to see all sorts of rolling stock littered across it all - and working as well!

And from the Ostbahnhof platforms you can see them loading and unloading the busy 'motorail' services. Also, just north of the station, the funny low-slung sleeper cars are usual parked.

Yep - and we had lorries on wagons as well - this is what the Central Railway want to do over the Woodhead.

The bizarre thing about the S-Bahn in the tunnels is of course they're STILL OHL powered even underground!

Most S-Bahns in Germany are. Mind you, Glasgow's like that.

It'd be nice to have these lines around Munich in MSTS... maybe ProTrain 3... a proper S-Bahn, with underground stations, plus some of the scenic branch lines and the main line as far as, say... Augsburg.

Had a day off today and bought a Bayern Ticket. 21 euros lets me travel amost all the railways in Bavaria for the day, but not inter-city trains. Not bad value, but could be better as I could have taken another 4 people with me on the same ticket. Started with an hour and a half trip to Garmish on the unit on the left. (the poster for mineral water on the far left is worth a look too).

Then I took the train to Kempten, two and a half hours winding around the mountains along the Austrian border, actually passing into Austria for a while. All the houses look like they were built by Kibri or Faller

This line used to be electrified (one of the first?) but has recently been de-electrified and faces an uncertain future. The single car unit had a crew of three, but they were outnumbered by the passengers today.

Then back to Munich on the tilting class 612. Just an ordinary stopping train, no big song-and-dance about tilting trains over here any more.

Yeah, the good ol' ET 420...ride these puppies almost daily. Not that they were bad, but well, they do get old. As for the sound they emit...I think I will still be hearing this distinctive whine long after they'll have been retired for good.

Yep - those are the ones - I liked the door handles on them - the new red flash thingies have a touch sensitive button with no feedback - tricky...
