railwayscene wrote:GNER provisionally celebrates ECML win - posted by First at 14:44, 01 March 2005:

GNER are celebrating winning the East Coast franchise, after a fiercely fought battle for the flagship route from Scotland to the English capital.

The announcement was made to Network Rail from the SRA, which requires to know to commence publication of the National Rail Timetable and associated documents as soon as the decision is made. An official announcement is rumoured to be 9th March.

No comments have been made publically by GNER - a wholly owned subsidiary of Sea Containers, or from any of the other bidders, who have all stated they will wait for an official announcement before committing themselves to comment, although First have suggested that the HSTs they purchased, which were very likely to be for the East Coast franchise, will form the backbone of the Greater Western bid.

GNER will operate the InterCity East Coast franchise until at least 2015, and a range of improvement measures have been put forward, which will be announced shortly.

probably means that Sea Containers/ Laing won't get the Greater Western then (are they bidding?). Provided of course that it's true. Have to say I think it's a good thing as GNER are/were the best intercity TOC IMO.

If this is true, then its good for the railways. GNER have to be one of the best TOCs in the UK, and its nice to know that we'll be seeing them for at least the next 10 years. :D

The SRA says GNER have to operate HST until 2007
and Class 91+MK4+DVT until 2008.

If Virgin got the franchise,it wouldn't even know what to do!!!!!!!!!

A bit of a dumb question, but what is a GNER mallard? I'm assuming that it is not a famous streamlined steam engine running ECML services.

I am thinking the same (and for First as well) but probably for a different reason.

Sorry, but what a load of rubbish (said as someone who does work for them in the front line!), typical of some of the general "anti-Virgin" comments that seem fashionable to make these days.............

At least I'm happy I won't see Pendolinos on the ECML south of Edinburgh.
