Saltley MPD......TO CLOSE

I just found out Saltley mpd in Birmingham is to close everythink is to move to Bescot.
This is sad news to me a lot of ofter people i should think.
I spent many happy hours Trainspotting in the last years of the 60's and and 70's getting kicked off by the foreman and sneaking back on.
The highlight was the 70's when the WCML was shut at the weekend bewteen stafford and tamworth and every think was diverted via Birmingham new street and nuneaton and diesel hauled.
Sitting at satley watching class 20's 25's 31's 37's 45's 47's a lot double headed the odd class 50 towing class 81's 82's 83's 84's 85's and 86's with 12,13 or 14 MK1's Those where the days and REAL TRAINS.
Yes i mite be a bit mad with posting this but
THOSE WHERE THE DAYS..............
 EWS
PS.
Any else had good spotting days or remember Steam days at Saltley mpd

I think you'll find the problem a little more deep routed than EWS. Try anyone who voted for Thatcher/Major for starters. OOooo, controversial!

Well where are the seagulls going to roost now? The only personal memory of all the times I have been to Saltley be it as an enthusiast or through work was back in 1991/2 when I went from Eastleigh Depot with 33035 in NSE livery, 73101 in Pullman livery with construction liveried 33064 for a 'taxi' to get home again. We got as far as the junction at Saltley (en route to Worksop Yd for the open day there) when we were signalled into the depot. My driver signed the route throughout but, because we were 'southern', Saltley didn't want us going beyond their into their territory which was rich considering they thought nothing of working all over the southern. In the end a huge row blew up and my driver threatened to screw the ED down so much that the only way anyone at Saltley would be able to move it was with a crane. After an hour, a compromise was reached and we stayed with our loco's and Toton provided 58012 to haul the loco's there. A bit of a waste of time really because once we got to Toton, we had a trip in the depot minibus to the chippy and then came back and were asked if we would take our engines to Worksop and tow 58011 (newly named Worksop Depot) and 89001 there!
We returned light engine via Toton and made it as far as Didcot yard where the Western region control worked out that we had left Eastleigh at 1530 the previous day and it was now 5 o'clock on the saturday morning, so they refused to allow us to drive on to Eastleigh. Ended up hitching a lift on the Tinsley - Eastleigh Yd freight with 37107 and 47236 DIT and got to Eastleigh around 06.30... On arrival there, it was a fast car to Weymouth to go on a Class 33 and 8TC railtour which was going to Welshpool!! Must have been mad in them days!

When I was younger I used to go to Saltley with my parents to watch the trains so it will be a shame to see it go
