The SR diesels were turbocharged, so they would whistle. I think the difference between the first 2 and the 3rd was the lack of an intercooler, but I could be wrong.

But they were not Napier turbos.....I am informed (by Snowcrashandy)they were Brown Boveri....so no whistling I'm afraid.
10203 would definately have Whistled....as this was 4 years later....and Napiers.

Cabview I reckon you could do worse than something like a 33. Not really right, but it does at least have the correct number of windows! a 73 might be reasonable too.

Practically all turbos whistle at some point in their speed range - the question is whether it would reach that point in normal running, and whether it would be loud enough to hear anyway...

Hi Barry
If you'd heard an English Electric class 40....you'd know what sort of whistling we were on about.....class 20s to a lesser degree.

Hi
An intercooler is a device which cools the air between the turbo and the cylinders.
As air is pressured it heats up and expands...by cooling it you basically get more into the cylinder...which gives you a more efficient combustion...hence more energy per cycle....for same size of engine.
Alot of lorries are intercooled these days.....and some cars.

Jon,

I used to live almost at the side of one of the coal lines in Nottingham; double-headed Class 20s whistling their way under Moorbridge and through Basfod Crossing was a several times a day occurrence, so I know what you mean. Even longer since I rode behind a 40...

I was just trying to get the point across, in similar fashion to your intercooler explanation, to those less technically savvy members.

My suggestion for a cabview would be something like a Class 20 running cab first as the outward appearance is somewhat similar i.e. 2 not so large squarish windows well spaced apart. Not sure about the cab layout as I never saw 10201/2/3 in any great detail.

As for sounds, it would be have to be class 50 for 10201/2 but Class 40 for 10203.

Thanks for pointing out that the whistle on the class 40s & 20s was caused by the Napier turbo. At long last I have found the reason why the 40s whistled with the 16SVT engine & the 20s with the 8SVT, but the 50s with the same engine (well the 16CSVT which had an intercooler fitted) had virtually no whistle (there is just the merest hint if you listen carefully whilst it's ticking over).

The class 31s were all (I think) re-engined with EE engines (they had Mirrlees engines from new, but they developed serious metal fatigue problems apparently) and they wouldn't have whistled as (AFAICT) they had no turbo fitted (the Ian Allan loco book for I think 1965 says the replacement engine was a 12SV not a 12SVT which was the engine fitted into the class 37)

A question: was the Napier turbo also fitted to the Napier Deltic engine i.e. the 18 cylinder version of which 2 were used in the Deltics? I doubt if the baby Deltics had turbos though.

Any chance someone could have a go at making the two LMS EE prototypes 10000/10001? I've found all the early prototypes except these two. These also used the 16SVT but the Mk1 version (1600hp)

Must shut up as I'm rambling!

The Baby Deltics certainly did have a turbo fitted, as the engine in them was even more highly tuned than there big brothers. I was lucky enough to see D5901 running though Burton Station in 1975/6 (carn't remember which). It was running light engin at about 15mph, but it was absolutely screaming its tits off! A most unbelievable sound! Many years later I found that it had a problem with its load regulator and wouldn't go over 15 mph. It never ran again. What a pitty it wasn't saved.
