Operators at this exhibition were plentiful and we are grateful to those that came along to join us, Laurie (Lad491), Martin (Saddletank), Ian Macmillan (whose PC unfortunately failed to start after he had set it up), Alan Howat and Andrew Irwin (amigaairwolf). Andrew spent Saturday with his own UKTrainSim stand at the Carlisle Cathedral Exhibition and then came to the Hawick Exhibition on Sunday.



it didnt cost me alot as it does with uktrainsim and i had great fun

there was a lot of interest although you wont have projectors you could possibly use a large tv if your pc has tv out(i didnt but plan to next time!)

it all helps to spread the word as alot of people didnt know about ukts

A question to the UKTSLive Team - what's your view of this?

If you are OK with this, perhaps a kit of paperwork/files that can be downloaded and printed out by a prospective DIY'er might be in order?

Possibly just a case of either stating your not the official UK Traim Sim website representatives, but are advertising their services (for which a DIY kit would be quite useful)

Just advertise MSTS in general using your own methods and give information about internet resources. Best place for Steam / Diesel / Electric / UK / European / US etc....

Not sure if UKTLive has permission from Commercial Developers to advertise their products too, but then you wont be selling copies, just showing them off. They would also be the owners personal copies too so cant be any problems with that

Yes, Luca, UKTSLive demonstrates commercial routes all the time. Some commercial teams are very supportive but from others we get no thanks at all...

I'm perfectly happy with this, it would need to be made clear it's not the main team of course; but I will try to sort out a 'kit' with the various bits of paperwork and so forth that we carry around so that people can print it out themselves and bring it along.

Anything that helps spread the word about the site and more importantly train simulation, MSTS and the upcoming products is very welcome.

You would need to contact the commercial groups for permission to promote their work but I don't think you'll get any complaints from them, the only thing I would say is to watch out and make sure you don't suddenly find yourself a vehicle for commercial products as we did without realising it at Brighton this year. If that's what you want to do then that's fine - it's your show after all - but if it's not your intent then keep that in mind

I think it is a good idea for members to do their own demonstrations.

One tip is to inform any traders and booksellers that you will be there.
They can then make sure they have MSTS and the commercial routes for sale on their stands.

Tip off the local game shops as well.

I think a kit would be very useful for those going it alone. I now have 3 shows under my belt.

For those who want to have a go. Print your self up some info about route that your running some info on website's etc.

Dont be put off if you dont have a TV Projector. I use 2X28" Tv's I picked up for £50 5.1 Sound System around £35 from asda


Get out there and some fun.

If someone is planning a demo somewhere, advertise it on here. That way you might get some free help....or at least some visits from other UKTS members.

Suggestion for Matt/Pete:

Any chance of adding non-UKTSL events to the calendar?


Thus we get the best of both worlds......both official and unofficial events!

I'm proberbly missing the point here....but why would anyone want to do their "Own" show...unless they'd got CDs or something to sell.
Obviously UKTS roadshow goes out to demonstrate to bring in more potential customers...they make a charge for this...plus hopefully gain new paying members.
Personally I've often wondered how many acutal members have directly joined because of a UKTS roadshow?

Doug - No problem with the addition of DIY shows to the calendar. All I would ask is that individuals that do their own thing on our behalf advertise themselves as a "UKTrainSim Members Roadshow". They will need to provide me with the full details to be included in the calendar as per our own UKTSLive Roadshows.

Jon - It is evident from looking at the visitors / new members after a roadshow that we do gain a fair number. It is not always possible to ascertain whether it is as a direct result of the roadshow or not, but a reasonable assumption can be made.
I am however perplexed by your comment "they make a charge for this". What charge, for what????

OK, all you guys out there who fancy the chance to sort out a demo at an event somewhere......here's your chance.

And anyone with connections with the GCR at Loughborough or Ruddington or anywhere in Notts/Derby who fancies seeing if a demo at one of their events might be possible, I would like to offer my services to help out. I might even be able to get hold of a projector.......

Ok, although I'm only a Porter I do know we hire out Stands on the GCR for a small fee at Loughborough, all under the Canopy (in places it has a leak cause we cant afford to fix the thing) but it's perfectly Dry.

The bad situation may be that it is Cramped, and exposed.

However there are plugs located nearby, and the Platform is pretty wide, another location if you didnt mind being in the open air would be the North end of the Platform, it's got a big area, and you could showcase the routes to people, with the Steam Loco's coming and going either side of you.

If that doesnt float your boat then you could try Quorn & Woodhouse, which has a fairly large Platform, however there is the Goods Yard which sometimes has a large Tent at some Galas (mostly Thomas Events).

I'm afraid I dont know who to ask, but I should imagine it would be somebody like Peter Haylock down there, I'll pass on your interest to him.

The next best event for you would probably be our Summer Steam Gala on the 23rd and 24th of July, which is normally pretty busy, for that we should have out the O4, the Standard 2, the Manor and possibly the Prarie Tank, and also a Guest Locomotive, possibly two.

I'll PM you the contact details when I know who you need to chat with.


P.S. If you want my advice, dont bother going to the North Section, GCR South has way more visitors.

Surly any thing we do to promote hobby is good thing. To me its no different than exhibiting my ngauge layout.

Right, I've had a chat with Peter Haylock and Annette today, and I was told that you will need to contact David Pladgeman, however he is on holiday this week, so I think anytime from Monday will be fine.

Just phone Loughborough Booking Office on 01509 230726 and ask for David Pladgeman anytime after Monday, as he handles that sort of thing.

There is a flat fee for holding a Stall, however most stalls are there for Profit, I'm not sure if we would do it for free it it's not for profit, either way I've got you the contact details, hope to hear some good news soon.
