Paddington To Penzance CD

Post by lateagain »

Wow Matt!

You pulled the library version quickly! Or did I get the name wrong?

I prefer to buy routes on CD anyway but I've been "sort of" following progress on this route since it was announced. I seem to remember miles of track but only a section sceneried?

Can you remind me where it's got to? i.e. What section it covers, degree of scenery, number of activities etc.

Also what era it's set in.

Apologies to those that think these questions obvious, but I just didn't keep up to speed with the development.

Paddington to Penzance was never on the library for download I thought? Maybe a patch or two for it but that's it? I could be wrong but either way, I didn't do anything :)

It's set around 30's I think, GWR semaphores etc. The route is track-complete from Paddington to Penzance including the two different primary routes and lots of branches - the track plan for this thing is absolutely enormous and most definitely NOT a point to point route :)

Scenery - bits are very good, bits are sparse or non-existant. All of it is terraformed, tracked and signalled and there are place holder stations with station markers in all the right places so people can get on writing activities now as the track database should not need to change.

Their plan is to continue plugging away at scenery and just release new world files as and when there's some new bits to add.

Activities and stock - they have gone for a lightweight approach, three basic activities, one setting you at Swindon, one running the Cornish Riviera and I can't remember the third one, there are a few bits of stock on the CD, half a dozen loco's etc.

Just had final approval from the guys so I have to run a couple more tests here and then we can cut the master and it'll be going on so hopefully by the weekend at the very latest it'll be available to order.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the detailed reply. As far as mileage and terraforming is concerned, WOW!!!

I've always been put off routes with sparse or no scenery which is why I didn't read up too closely on this one. I just assumed that it had been in the file library and that I'd not bothered for that reason.

With all that track Beeching would turn in his grave!!

I'm sure I read bits about it in the forum but until I saw the extent of trackwork it didn't really strike home about what had been achieved.

I can see it would have to be an ongoing project, and with all the excellent GWR and Western Region stock out there, hopefully one that will keep going.

Only question that leaves is that I seem to recall reading about some limitation with paths (?) that's come to light with some of the US long distance routes and activities. Not that many of us have the time to run these long routes in one go :-?

Still I can see why you're releasing the CD.

Having helped test version 2 of this route, I think I have managed to cover every one of the 1383 route miles, and it was worth it. Please bear in mind that nothing is perfect in this world, but I know Derick Joy and Dave Pascoe, the joint builders of this route, have strived to obtain the best they can do and more so.

Although a fair percentage of the route has not had scenery applied (It would take forever) the track has been laid as accurately as possible within the limits of MSTS. Although I helped test this route I do commend it to anyone who wants the best of main line running and branch routes.
