British Steam Railways - magazine/DVD

OK, I know this is not directly related to MSTS, but anyone with an interest in Mallard and other A4s could do worse than to look at this. The magazine's a bit shallow, but there's some reasonable film (archive and "preserved" runs) on the DVD that make the £3 introductory price quite fair.

P.S. Not that I'd ever go in, read all the magazines and buy nothing like some people allegedly do..... Still got me (whoops, some one who does that, that is) there then. Don't suppose they'd poke up with you turning up with a portable DVD player for a preview?

Well you've got to have a look before you buy.... ........I've told them before they should provide a table and a few chairs for comfort.
I think a portable DVD is pushing it a bit though.

Hehe - didn't know how much interest there'd be.
It's a new railway-focused magazine with DVD (or VHS) that retails from the usual magazine places (like Smiths) 2-weekly. The promo issue (No. 1!!!!) is stuck to a big sheet of card with all the contents listed on the back. The web site is

and although there is little in the thin magazine that steam fans won't know, the film clips (some B&W, some colour) on the DVD are interesting. It's one of those "build up into a collection ..........." publications. Film quality is "archive" (newsreel, promo clips and some professional/amateur stuff) binding together accounts of Mallard and other A4s with commentary. There's an excellent clip of Belle Isle (King's Cross) - unused footage shot for The Ladykillers - and a "filler" on navvies that says almost nothing! Since each issue will have a theme, it's probably one to buy when there's a subject of interest to the individual (Scotsman in issue 2 - surprise, surprise).

Does anyone know where I can buy this? WH Smiths haven't had it in and GT News in Sheffield have never heard of it. I have been all over the city and haven't seen it in any newsagents.

Nice idea but that would buy 8 or more dedicated rail DVD's from a supplier like SPV. (I know they deal in US rail stuff.)

Shame some of the past producers of TV rail documentaries don't release their stuff on DVD

I asked the manager of Nottingham WH Smiths today & he said it would be advertised in 1 region only to start (what part of the country was this on sale?) & that it should become nationwide. I wonder if that depends on sales?

I live in the Tyne/Tees TV area and have seen the advert atleast 20 times, As was mentioned above there's not a lot in the mag but the DVD seems OK, Some of the footage is quite good although Mallard was been stalked by a helicopter in some of it's mainline runs. It also contained the BTF production "The Elizabethan" which in my opinion would be worth the asking price alone. Just happens that the NYMR's Pickering shop were selling some donated video's for £2:50 so I snapped a few up and one has 4 BTF films including the Elizabethan I'll probably buy the next mag and see if it gets better/worse and then decide if to carry on with it. Hopefully it won't go subscription only. If it does then there's always the Railway Monthly.

I agree with every word, TOMMO79. Got mine from the Metro Centre, Gateshead. The North East seems to be the test area for this. The rest of you should come up to buy your mag .... and visit Shildon, Weardale, Tanfield, Bowes and the Stephenson Museum while you're here Seriously, I'm sure a good newsagent could have it ordered.

Thought I'd revive this thread to see if anyone had further comments to make on the mag/DVD, Well I have anyway

I've bought issues 2&3, Both have some very nice material. I haven't yet found the time to read the mags from cover to cover even though they are quite small but they contain well written articles such as a history of Doncaster works and the building of the Forth bridge. They are nicely illustrated with things such as old railway posters and Cuneo paintings. The DVD's are very good too with contributions from established names such as Video 125 & PSOV who film the Mainline Steam series, Some old newsreels, Official training video's and the latest issue has the entire Night Mail film. The DVD's cover more than the featured loco for example the Flying Scotsman issue had an item on firing a King and the noise it makes working flat out in the last sequence has to be heard to be believed

Well worth the money in my opinion and I'll deffinetly get the next issue ( Clan Line / Barry Scrapyard + more) I just hope it doesn't all go wrong like it did for The Railway Monthly R.I.P

For legal reasons maybe I should point out that I'm a factory worker and not a magazine salesman
