Silent whistle with 2-cylinder sound set

Post by AdamsRadial »

Can anyone help me wet me whistle?

I've downloaded the 2-cylinder sound set and got it working fine, (brilliant sounds !), except, I can't get the whistle to sound. The whistle control is working, because the steam plume comes out of the appropriate place on the engine, and the WHISTLE ON legend appears, but not a peep (sorry) from the speakers.

Look in the loco's sound .sms file and see where the whistle file is being sought from, it'll look something like:-

Stream(
Skip( **** Whistle sounds. **** )
Priority( 6 )
Triggers( 2
Discrete_Trigger ( 8 StartLoopRelease ( 1 File( "../../SCOTSMAN/Sound/x_fs_whistle1.wav" -1 ) SelectionMethod ( SequentialSelection ) ) )
Discrete_Trigger ( 9 ReleaseLoopReleaseWithJump () )
)
)

then either check it's there and named correctly.............or point it at the whistle sound you want.....................

At the very least point it at a whistle sound other than the scotsman's tin-whistle-out-of-a-cracker!

Our Version is:- "It's 14 miles to Worthing, we've a full tank of gas, half of which will be gone by the time we get there, it's 8 a.m., and we have to leave NOW to get there for 11.................!! ;-)

Back to Topic

I used to get this on my old windows 98 machine.

It may be a shedding feature of the sound system where the whistle goes first

When I upgraded the problem went away

Two solutions to this problem:-

- download and install my Loco Whistles pack

File ID 2919

- if that don't cure it then do this

Thanks Stuart, I'll try the whistles pack - the Scotsman default is a bit of a soprano affair :)

Thanks everyone for the other advice, all very much appreciated.

The 2-cylinder set expects to find a whistle sound called "x_whistle_fs_01.wav" in the "UK_Shared" folder, but it isn't in the DL pack.

Copy the (external) whistle sound of your choice into the UK_Shared folder and rename it "x_whistle_fs_01.wav" to achieve a whistle.

Alternatively, place your desired whistle in UK_Shared, then open the appropriate .SMS file, browse to about line 379 and replace

File ( "../UK_Shared/x_whistle_fs_01.wav" -1 )

with

File ( "../UK_Shared/my_whistle_name.wav" -1 )

I have just had to do this in the last 24 hours.

HTH.
