The MSTS 1 Route Editor can be a beast to use, but it's capable of some amazing results, here you can talk with the wizards that are building some of the fantastic routes available and learn how to make your own.

Paddington Penzance

Post by johncarr »

I am helping Derrick Joy and Dave Pascoe test the latest version of the Paddington Penzance route and I have been given permission to publish a few of the pictures I have obtained during that process.

Please bear with me as this is the first time I have tried to show some screen shots and it might take a few edits to get it right. I am aiming to set up thumblinks that should lead you to the Atomic Album. If I am successful more pictures will follow.

I'll start with Western Queen at Swindon ex Paddington bound for Bristol Temple Meads. It took 3 edits before it worked so here are two more pictures. The two new pictures show the same Western at Bath & Bristol.

Looks superb, I really like Bristol. Perhaps they should include the Bristol - Mangotsfield - Bath line as well, then do the Somerset & Dorset ;).

Looks nice. If the route authors are interested, the footbridge connecting the north and south buildings at Swindon was removed about August 1965.

Martin thanks for that comment re footbridge. That's the kind of info I must leave to Derrick Joy and Dave Pascoe to pick up, or have passed on to them by me and others as my experience of the GWR was more to the East, and then only as a trainspotter some 50 plus years ago.

I'm sure most of you are aware that Derrick Joy lives in America and Dave Pascoe lives in The Netherlands. It's a daunting task trying to produce such a vast route structure, especially when you have other things that must be done in order to survive in this day and age, like work, and also that they live a few miles away from the route. Having been lucky enough to see Highworth in it's initial stages I fully appreciate the time and effort that goes into a route. I'm sorry I had to duck out helping test your route Martin, but at that stage the NRM needed a little help sim wise. I hope I can now help the sim world again with basic track testing etc.

A couple more pictures of the same Western reaching Totnes and Plymouth. Soon be at Penzance.

Simont,
I have sent you an email with a picture of the Activity Editor route. With time and Derrick and Dave's permission I will post smaller parts of the route so we can all see what has been added.

John Carr--- Many thanks for your updates.
Re route dating ---- I had assumed the route was intended to be set in the 50's--60's and based essentually. on the 1947 "Atlas of the Great Western Railway". So presumably features like the Swindon footbridge would be totally in keeping with the depiction of the route.

Cheers

I'll have to leave the "precise" period of operation for Dave or Derrick to answer, but I have a feeling you might be correct.

At the moment I am torn between putting these answers in the Route Building section and this one as I do intend to publish more screen shots as I get around the route. Perhaps a Moderator could give some guidance on this please??

My priority at the moment is help Derrick and Dave by driving around on every piece of track to see if if works OK.

I think the potential is there for those who like main line driving, include me in that category, and those who like to amble up and down a country branch.

Pcelt ...John...

Yes our route is based on loosely the 1950's so I'm sure has no resemblance to the modern day.
As far as Exeter St Davids is concerned , we initially started our route 3 years ago from Exeter and not knowing how far we would get , we used the default Carlisle station as it ( with a lot of imagination ) could resemble the station ( in fog with a serious snow storm...typically Exeter weather !! ).
The problem we have ( as everybody making period routes ) is that most photographs of the period were in black and white and of the locos at the end of platforms and not of the stations themselves and that doesn't help when you want to build a colour model and make colour textures for that model.

I made the offer last month , and it still stands...if anybody can furbish me with good photograhs of their particular station that they would like to see in the route ( period set ) , then time willing i will do it and that includes Exeter St Davids .

Thanks John again for all your hard work.

Hi Andy...

OK looking forward to some pictures of the station .Was the signal box so different to a standard GWR? We tend to use the excellent uploaded GWR boxes available . Please send them jpeg to my email address . If you have a sketch of the platform layout with which was the up main/down main and numbering that would be a tremendous help .

Thanks in advance guys
