steam loco sounds - cruising

I have just tydied up my system by re-installing MSTS. Everything works OK except that now the steam locos do not return to cruising sounds when the regulator is closed. I am sure they did beforehand!
Is this a fault or had I installed something before that made the change? Can anyone help?

Do you get any sound at all with the regulator closed?
If you've installed some of the sound upgrade packs, it's probably that they are overwriting or bypassing (depending on the installation and the .eng file mods) the default sounds, as many upgrade sounds are designed to mute while running with a closed reg in order to simulate the prototypical lack of 'chuff' in this mode.

Barry's right. The UKSteam loco sounds by Jeff Ashton and Stuart Williamson are what you probably had installed before as these give a silent coasting effect without exhaust beat. The engine you are driving sound slike it's still using the default Scotsman or 380 sounds, so reinstall the steam sounds or alias your loco to the sound set if you still have it.

Thanks for the helpful replies.
When coasting I have both the background stock sounds and the locmotive "chuf" both of which change correctly with speed.
I have installed the Severn Valley upgrade and am generally using one of these locomotives or one of the other BATS locos. The sounds I am getting are the correct ones for the loco, but I still have the annoying retention of the chuf when coasting!
Do any of the upgrades correct any of the core files to prevent the default sound habit of chuffing whilst coasting? If so, how do I get the change back again?
All this sound stuff is a bit baffling!!

That's odd, the SVR locos should coast silently. I must fire up the route again and check my ones.

You can't easily chnage a locos sound from chuffing-coasting to silent-coasting but need to use a different sms file. There are quite a few decent loco sound sets around now on UKTS and in commercial routes, plus a good variety of whistles (which are easier to change from one loco to another).

Thanks for the mention, but Stuart must get all the credit for the steam locomotive sounds. I only helped on the coach and wagon sounds.

I have done a little more trial running to see what does what.
Running locos aliased to use the generic sounds by Stuart Williamson which I downloaded some time ago, the chuffing does stop correctly when the regulator is closed. This is also the case with locos that came with the Skipton to Carlisle 1920s by Pat Dalton et al. However, despite re-installing the BATS locos, they all continue to chuff when coasting.
I have compared the SMS files to try and spot a difference between ones that work and ones that don't, but nothing stands out.
As the BATS sounds are so good and specific to the locos, it would be a shame to use the generic ones.
Does anyone know the key instruction in the SMS file that implements the shutdown of the chuffing when the regulator is closed? If so, could they let me know and I will see if I can edit the BATS SMS files accordingly.
Alternatively, is there another explanation for this different behaviour.

BA's locos use the default sms's with replacement .wav files only. Hence the recordings are very good/realistic but the integration into the sim very poor. There's a file in the library which address this. It's not mine, and I've never need to use it, so I don't know which method it uses, but I think it will be the extra SetStreamVolume triggers one.

Someone else who thought BA locos cut off worked then suddenly didn't!!
I thought I was going mad! You would think that BA would have included a coasting sound having gone to all the trouble of including different sounds for individual locos.

I have downloaded the patch for Scotsman & it didn't work! Now I'm sure I'm MAD!!!

It's great to hear I'm not alone!
I have looked at the sms file for correcting flying scotsman and note that it looks almost exactly the same as the files used by BATs, so it seems logical that if the BATS locos still chuff when coasting, then the updated file won't work either.
I have tried aliasing to the Stuart Williamson generic sounds and they work fine.
I am now trying to adapt the Stuart Williamson sms files to work with renamed bats sounds and am having some success. After matching Stuarts sounds to the BATS sounds I can get some semblance of co-ordination. However, I have only managed the B1 sounds for external view so far and only the cruises sounds, not the others yet.
It's a bit laborious, but I will let you know how I get on.

I know this is sounding like the thought police are out but Matt has asked us to be circumspect when discussing commercial work in a negative way as last time this happened we ended up with a pretty nasty thread (for which I was partly to blame - sorry!).

Anyway, thanks and try to resolve the less than perfect sound issues by positive discussion.
