Dukedog

Post by spitfiresrbest »

I have just downloaded GMAX and the related tutorials and help files. I havent even looked at them yet nor have I opened the program itself more than once. If learn how to use the program and produce shapes etc to my satisfaction and after Ive read all the relevant forum topics and played about with everything necessary to create a locomotive to use in MSTS Id quite like my first loco to be a Dukedog.
I say this now because it isnt the only loco I have on my "to do" list and I wouldnt like to step on anyone's toes by releasing something someone else has planned.
Id like to create it because itd be appropriate for the Cambrian route, its a beautiful locomotive and there is one in preservation so it could be used on the Severn Valley route.
If someone else has this loco on their list and objects to my creating it(bearing in mind I may end up deleting GMAX in a fit of rage) then Id like to know because there are many locos out there that are still to be done. If there is any objection then the next loco on my list is a Bagnall 0-4-0, probably Sybil that worked at the Dinorwic Quarry

Thanks

A commercial one has been built but is not due for release for quite a while. There is no freeware one. Take a look at some of Robin Howell's lovely 4-4-0s they should give you some inspiration.

I did. Twas them that inspired me and my post was aimed at him in particular as well as to the community in general. I thought it might be something he'd planned to do. A Commercial one............... :-? Kinda puts me off but then not all commerical models are that brilliant. Would sort of feel in competition with it in terms of desirability from the downloaders point of view :-? I probably wont be able to start doing anything useful with GMAX for a while anyway because I imagine it takes a while to master.
I know everyone is different but how long does it take per loco on average from thinking about it to uploading it? If its ages then the bagnall itll be

Don't let it put you off! everyone can do as well as a commercial modeller, it just takes a bit of practice.
With freeware, the only person you need to satisfy is yourself.

probably a slight understatement, it is quite complex. (but then I'm biased) ;)

Working part time evenings I reckon to get about 1 done per month - depends on the model as tenders also take a bit of time.

I'm all for more GWR (I'm afraid I've been lured to the dark side with more SR models soon) I can certainly make a few other suggestions if you're keen.

Im a student so naturally have lots of free time :) Should be able to devote a few hours a day to it without it making any difference to my studies or my social life. Now they've moved Countdown there is the 4pm-5:30pm gap of nothingness to fill :)
I love GWR stuff too. All suggestions are welcome - choosing the Dukedog was a bit of a cop out because of its simple outside motion too. Thought it would be a good way of getting to grips with the fundamentals of animation.
So suggest away and thankyou everyone for your support so far. It makes me want to build it even more knowing that people want to use it

Remember all the commercial models are built by people who are self taught and started off their careers doing freeware.

Hi

Have you thought of using 3DCanvas, 'cause Paul has put up a range of tutorials to help you do it (you can find it in the 3DCanvas forum on this site) Good Luck!

The Abacus web site has a kit of dst files for a Duke class which using TSM will create the locomotive for you. I have used these files, after tweaking some of them, to create a Dukedog (3224) for my own use. This particular locomotive was shedded at Shrewsbury and Machynleth (last allocation), being withdrawn in 1957.

Chris,

It is difficult to find using the Abacus link in TSM, but try http://trainsimulatorworld.com

Then scroll to the foot of the page and click on TrainSimDownloads in the last sentence. Now click on Free 3D Models made with Train Sim Modeler and scroll to near the bottom of the page and you will find two illustrations of the Iron Duke, one the loco and the other the tender, you must download both.

A screenshot of Dukedog 3224, constructed from tweaked Abacus parts.
