MSTS Folder Cleansing

Post by spitfiresrbest »

Having had a morning with little uni work on I went through my MSTS Folder and deleted all the routes, with the exception of the texture and shape files etc, most of the default stock and all of the consists that relate to them. I never use the US stuff and it clogs up the consist editor. Am now down to the Cambrian and Severn Valley Routes only with their stock, consists and my downloaded stock and consists (all my NG stuff is currently in store with the routes). MSTS loads much faster than it did and consist management and creation is far slicker.
Has anyone else tried this?

I just use TrainStore.........It stores all the routes, stock, consists, paths etc..... that you aren't using and my MSTS load time drops to about 20secs from about a minute+. Then if you ever need any of the items back you can just unstore and they're back.

Cheers

Dave.

Where can I get TrainStore? Is it freeware? Is it easy to use?

I have store folders for all my routes on a seperate partition.
Each route folder contains a consist folder and a trainset folder.
All aliasing is done to a folder in the trains folder which contains the default
stock and the common folders.

Therefore my routes consists and trainset folders can be empty. They usually only contain anything I am working on.

When I want to run a route, I move anything I am working on to a temp folder then I use a shortcut to the routes store folder and drag the route into a shortcut to the MSTS routes folder.
I then open the route folder and drag the consists and trainsets to the MSTS folders and off I go.
To avoid duplications most routes have common trainset folders mostly stored with the route they came with and again accessed by a shortcut.

When I am finished with the route I simply delete the contents from the MSTS folders. As the routes are on a separate partition the originals remain safe.

This method also has advantages when downloading stuff.
With empty folders you can see exactly what is installed. Saves all the problems when a loco, route or activity installs a consist and you don't notice it until you delete something it uses.

Search (in the file library - "Train Store") and ye shall find!

You can freely delete:

Tutorial Route (From ROUTES)
HELP
TEMPLATE
SAMPLES

as MsTS does not need these to run. I also deleted all Readme Files and pictures in the main folder, and it does look a lot cleaner.

Careful about deleting TEMPLATE. It will probably be needed by the installme.bat of new routes.

TEMPLATE
Yip, watch that one, its the normal starting point for a route though most stuff seems to be in Europe 1 as well... posibly suggests that S&C is the first route Kuju built for Trainsim..... also seing as its probably the worst of the lot.

I use a system like Ian's. I found TS to be a bit over the top for what I want. As I have very no default consists left (and very few from other routes), everything on my system is pretty much my own creation, I found it to be to cumbersome. I am very comfy moving things around in the file manager, so I created folders to move things in and out of.

For the average end user, trainstore is probably a good idea. But as an activity designer, I tend to jump around between routes when the AE is open, I prefer to do it my own way.
