Catch points, trap points and sand drags

Tim Booth created an absolutely stunning track system for MSTS called UKFineScale (aka UKFS). Accurate track profiles, hyper detailed track pieces and points etc make for stunning routes, before you even start thinking about scenery!

Catch points, trap points and sand drags

Post by bristolian »

Hello all,

In UKFS, are there ways to produce catch and trap points, and sand drags?

Thanks, Bob.

UKFS V3.1 contains catch/trap turnouts, in a few common formats - these should cover most situations.

Catch/trap turnouts work like normal turnouts, in activities you just set the path through them (the default is to derail) - if the path ahead is occupied, then MSTS will switch the catch turnouts to the derail path. Once the path is clear, then the catch turnout switches to the normal position. This does mean in explore mode that you have to manually switch each catch turnout as you approach them.

You can also use them to protect against wrong direction of travel, where the catch/trap turnout would derail trains running the wrong way along a track. Again, only works properly with activities.

Sand drag track shapes may be included in V3.2, though only in a graphical nature - not actually slowing the train.

Hope that helps.

Catch points, et al...

hello Tim, thanks for your help.
It will please you no doubt that, although this is my first project with MSTS (I've only had it since Xmas(!), I am using your creation for its' much more prototypical effect.

I'm creating a section of the Lickey, from just south of Bromsgrove, to the summit station of Blackwell. Initially it'll try to convey the effect of the track layout in steam days...hopefully :-)

Best wishes, Bob.
