Train Failure activity for LBE
hi there, im doing an activity for LBE which has you using an old NSE 47 (atm) to pick up a broken down 4VEP. The problem is that said 47 will only pull the VEP at 40 MPH making it essentially a long slow run. Can anyone recommend anything other than a 66 to to use that can haul it a bit faster, say at least 60MPH. Also, no 73s. If not, i will just leave the 47 in and make it a long slow drag.

There would have been far more likelyhood of a Class 33 (either single or in multiple) that we would use to rescue failed EMU's (thats from my experience as Sen Power Controller for NSE).

Fragonset have a number of Class 33 locomotives which are sub leased to SWT and other TOC's at various times for their use. Locomotives in the pool include 33021 / 046/ 103 / 108 / 202. Other private owned versions such as 33109 and 33208 have also been hired in for assisting duties.

A 47 should be able to pull a VEP at full speed. Check the brakes, as there might be some rogue 47's that still have double brake pipes.

A Crompton or a 73 would be favourites for the job though.

Something else that could be done which would be more suitable for modern EMUs would be to have a failed train in front that you had to assist to the next station so passengers could detrain, then dump in a siding before continuing your journey. I'm not 100% sure but I think this would happen more often with slammers aswell, as it would take time to get a rescue loco out but the chances are a suitable train is following behind.

No reason why a slam door cannot assist a slam door. Say unit 1 is at Haywards Heath (headed for Brighton) and you are following, maybe a queue of trains in front as everything else uses the loop(?) and you pull in behind the unit and what was a 4-VEP is now 4-VEP and 4-CIG!! Dont know if MSTS could handle it though?
