More info on the two Bulleid prototypes here.

Ingenious solution to overcrowding - on paper. Poor ventilation and increased station dwell times, along with cramped accommodation meant the idea was not pursued.

We can't get it right here but in France and Holland they run double deckers very successfully....was in Paris 2 weeks ago and had a look inside...spacious... bright...clean..and lots of seats....whereas here we are cutting down on sitting to increase standing :o

I don't know about standing room in the bloody things - I used to catch it on the 0818 Bexleyheath to Welling for school on may occasions and it was like being in a sardine tin!

Spacious - yes. They have a larger loading gauge on the continent, so they can make true double-deck trains, not the 1-and-a-half deck abominations that trawled between Cannon Street and Dartford for over 20 years....
