Injector Sizes

Post by supergoods »

Does anybody know the injector cone sizes for small NG locomotives, say Festiniog Prince or the Talyllyn originals?

Obviously Default Scotsman values put water in too fast and steal too much steam doing it.

Some of the more technical guys i.e. Pitley might know this.

Pitley is your man for Tech details on Tallyllyn locos - he is however on Holiday in the IOM gathering info/photos etc for Project IOM. If he gets on ManxPeacock's PC (which he might) then I'm sure he'll be able to tell you.

Injector cone sizes

Post by andrewgadd »

Cone sizes are measured in "mm". GWR Locos use 8mm and 10mm cones but used 6mm cones for small industrial adsorbed locos.

I would guess TR & FR locos use 4mm or 5mm cones.

Thanks for the input Andrew, I found later that the range of injector cones manufactured in the UK was from 5 to 16mm, so it appears that 5mm is the smallest unless somebody knows of smaller injectors for NG locos.

Obviously the model engineering fraternity would use smaller, although I suspect they may use pumps instead

Model and minature engineers use injectors with cone sizes down to 1mm !

Firemans side 4mm drivers side 5mm on all TR engines, dont ask what pintage that produces as one charming passenger did once!

Christian,

Thanks for the info, if you have any boiler data on one of the Tal y llyn engines, I would appreciate it

Tube specs, heating surfaces, grate area, boiler diameter and firbox outer length if you have them

What I want to do is produce a theoretical MaxBoilerOutput Value to use as a lower reference point for the upgrade to my .eng file calculator

Supergoods:

Boiler Barrel Dia:2ft 61/2 in and 2ft 61/2 in
Grate Area : 2.88sq feet and 2.88sq feet
Heating surface: 156 sq feet and 128sq feet
Cylinders: 8x16 and 8x16 in
Bunker Cap: 6cwt and 6 cwt
Tank Capacity: 200 gal and 140 gal
Driving Wheel dia: 2ft 4 and 2ft 4

Boiler Pressure 160 and 160 p.s.i

First figure quoted is for No.1 Talyllyn and the second for No.2 Dolgoch. This is all I can find for the engines, although just tell me if you need any more figures.

Thanks again Christian,

I'll see if my search engine will cooperate and find me a good engineering drawing somewhere to get what I need, any pointers in this direction would be appreciated.

Ian

Bear in mind that Christian’s dimensions are as the engines currently exist, I know that No 1 for example was built with a boiler pressure of only 120psi.
