Current state of the layout is the sleepers have had a coat of paint, the platforms are under construction and I have built the small hut near the signal box along with the platelayers hut at the end of the platform on the CLC line.

However, what you have done is reaffirmed by decision to abandon any thoughts of building my own layout in favour of the MSTS Route variety - that way the 'domestic' ( ) impact is kept to inside my PC instead of in the loft or a bedroom.

BTW - are you going to model the Walls Bacon factory next door? And if so, what about the smell? According to ymee it was quite a pong!

I'm lucky in that respect as my wife appreciates my love of railways and when we moved house one of the criteria was a garage that could be converted specifically for a layout.

I'm not sure of the exact location of the Bacon factory but looking at the diagram that you posted in the other thread, I assume it was behind the up sidings, in which case it will probably be either low relief or painted onto the backscene.

How long has it taken you to reach this stage? planning and the like.

facinating stuff. I too opted for the MSTS route and to sell off my MR collection to gain space. :/

Originally, vCTRL was planned as an N-Gauge attempt at a small section of the route, while the current project has the ability to cover it in its entirety. somehting i favoured.

btw, how have you designed ur track layout? i wouldnt mind using such a package to design sections of vCTRL, to make sure the track work is correct.

The package I used is called WinRail currently at v6.0. You can download a demo copy from http://www.winrail.com/. In total the time spent planning this and building to the current state is about 18 months (The track was started in April 2003). I expect the layout to probably take between another 5 - 7 years before it is complete. I am currently awaiting some news regarding an N gauge resin kit for the class 76 locos of which I need about 12. I may in the future scratchbuild another class 506 unit but the track in the fiddle yard is laid with a loop common to both up and down lines so I could get away with only one. Hopefully Bachmann will release the MGR hoppers by the end of this year as the Minitrix ones are like golddust.

N Gauge was the only way I could fit in what I wanted, however, I am planning to do Reddish Depot in 4mm scale (probably EM) as I fancy a go at track building.

If you mean the snow, unfortunately I will have to pass on that, as I don't fancy a snow scene.

Yes I will be creating the catenary using brass section, etched parts and commercially available wire (somerfeldt unless I can find anything better). Sorry I don't have any pictures as I have not built any yet (I do however have some pictures of my old layout). My old layout used 1/16" square brass tube for the masts. This time I intend to use H columns for the uprights and I beam for the cross members to give a more scale appearance.

I have actually redesigned the track in this area as other photos I have seen show the points after the signal box (in the direction of Arpley) nearer to the siding in between the up loop and the up main. This also means I will get more space between the end of the electrification and my backscene which I hope will look better.

Current update on layout all platforms are now constructed but not completed (Need painting and surface finishing). Been considering control equipment and am seriously contemplating Digital Command Control (DCC) for the operation of the locos with the points and signals being controlled initially by a mimic display panel, but in the future maybe by DCC and a PC.

I have been concentrating on constructing the BOC tanker train (part of which can be seen in one of the previous photos) which is now ready for the paint shops and I am awaiting transfers which hopefully will be ready in the next month.
