What are your favorite route and how many do you use???/
This weekend I finally got rid of an old friend.
I removed Mid East UK from my hard drive. I dont know if its just me but as more and more authors produce routes of such quality. I found it was looking increasingly dated. This was the first Trainsim route I got and at that time thought it xcellent. The trouble is though it has been extended the attention to scenic detail did not keep pace. Rather cruelly one of my mdelling friends refers to it as "Post Holocaust "( Emty engines running into empty stations for no reason with not a soul in sight) and really I cant argue. When I compare it to curreent routes R-L-Barmouth Tallyn, FUDE one realises how ffar we have come. I suppose there will be some to who the lack of scnic realism doent matter and Mid east has some excellent activities. My problem is with 60 gigs of hard drive and with two new routes comming shortly Im reaching a rapid pruning point Its sad to see it go though. How do others manage ??? Ive compartmentalised my drive 30 gigs and two 15 gigs for storing and short of getting a much bigger hard drive Im stumped. so how are others coping and if you had five favourite routes to keep which ones would they be
Cheers

1. Mid East UK
2. Talyllyn
3. West Highland Line
4.Pat Dalton's 1930's S&C (would say the new 1 but not driven it yet).
5. Raubon Llangollen and Bala line (same as Pat's S&C would put new version but have not ordered it yet).
Couldn't really put them in any order of which 1's I would keep, I'd just delete the MSTS 1's first

Still downloading and trying routes so don't have any favourites yet.
Got renewed interest in MSTS routes since I have converted the activities to use British stock. 3x37s on the Marias Pass with 50 TTAs looks great!
More to the point is my least favourite......Anything with miles of track and nothing else . . . too many of these even on comercial CDs.

I take your point and you have reminded me I also will probably want S & C. I think you say you have not seen R-L-Barmouth and when you do you I think will be surprised at the level of detail. There is a post in theroute building forum which I started about having sufficient computing power to handle the frame rates, I admit My weekness is for railways having the level of detail a "Railway Modeller " might try and achieve on a phyisical layout whicch is why my choice would be different to yours. All these routes are good I think when has to make a choice soomee are better than others. I also like verns WH route but its a bit empty around the roads.
The reasoon I havnt taken out the Train sim routes is that most of the CD roms and download say the full routes must be installed, I have got rid of the rolling stock and activity files but would think twice about removing everything its good to hear another opinion though
cheers

I admit I have kept them on but I have deleted the engines (except cab and sound files), rolling stock, activities, traffic, services and all but 2 paths (1 each way) for all the non-UK routes but then again I have sufficient space (60gb) available to MSTS, if you had no plans to install any more routes then what you have on you could probably delete the msts default routes, however I would suggest moving them to another location on your comp first to test it out.watermusic wrote:The reasoon I havnt taken out the Train sim routes is that most of the CD roms and download say the full routes must be installed, I have got rid of the rolling stock and activity files but would think twice about removing everything its good to hear another opinion though

Ive got:
Default s n c
Swansea
Ruabon-Barmouth
Fife
Woodhead
I use Ruabon and Swansea most, mainly cos of the GWR thing
I have all 6 default routes zipped up on CD so when a new route comes out for download i just plop em back in for the copying purposes,
Ive deleted a few beta routes recently carlise glasgow being one of em, mainly to make room for Paddington penzance when it goes live!

I think people tend to think it's a race to get the latest stuff. Personally I have only a few extra routes installed but loads of rolling stock; I assume you've aliased all the cab and sound files to save on disk space? Maybe you've been playing the sim too much - you can have too much of a good thing you know!

I do not like the Woodhead route, because there is no poing in having the Next Station display up, as its just blank.
I have MidEastUK, its OK, but is it not electric? this one isnt.
I think its a bit of a pity as most routes are built from the past- when the author grew up.
I am only 17, therefore i do not know what they were like. I have a 1986 video of the MML route, and the one being built is from about then i think, but would be better if it were nowerdays!LOL.
I am in the middle of getting the CALDERVALE line, for Leeds Station, but i would like as many routes as i can- ones that work properly.
I downloaded the FAIRLY UP-TO-DATE-ENGLAND route it was OK, i cant remember though if it were this one, or MODERN ENGLAND or another one, that had a load of stations from the North to the south and some TTTE ones to?! That was a nice route, should have not had real station names though, spoilt it when i went through Leicester, ans it wasnt Leicester.

It helps if you take the correct route, there is PLENTY of short side routes on the line (spent a good bit of time at Doncaster show driving from Manchester to Sheffield in explore route mode taking all the wrong turnings, the next station display helped as when it was blank you knew you had gone the wrong waypetermakosch wrote:I do not like the Woodhead route, because there is no poing in having the Next Station display up, as its just blank.
I'm only 19 but I can remember the non-electrified days of the ECML (JUST!) I think it is more likely a route builder will want to do the route as they remember it or as how they considered it best (I don't think Saddletank was around Swindon in the 1920'spetermakosch wrote:I have MidEastUK, its OK, but is it not electric? this one isnt.

Interesting isnt it Trainsim seems to be going the same way as model layouts around the shows and in the mags a strong preponderance of Gods Wonderful Railway. I suppose it is likey we remember railways as we knew them ( Which Im wating on Cannock Chase the line I grew by) and why I couldnt part with S & C 1930 (the railway I came to live alongside). Modern day railways with diesels will be a favourite with todays generation but to the Steam Generation who came to terms with the fact that closing the regulator doesnt mean the train is going to slow down and stop Diesels seem a bit tame (but to each his own) another route i have had to file is Woodhead and Calderdale both excellent but its getting I darent look in my TRAINSET directory as every activity and new route means more and more stock. I play Trainsim a lot and 20 gigs of my C drive is all train sim and I use this computer for recreation and Simulations and internet use not for business or wordprocessing. I feel as I get more and more routes and more and more activities and stock Im going to have to start grovelling to the good lady I need a 120 gigs of Hard drive .
Ah well we will see Im just testing the festiog route and that looks as though its going to be a must also
Cheers
