IMO I think the engine sound are a bit quiet, however I was only a child when the were withdrawn so I don't really remember them.
Dave:)
I remember them and they were loud, this is far too quiet, it's not as loud as the AP class 50 and even an idling 101 DMU drowns it out! Wonder if it's possible to tweak any files to increase the volume?
Most of the engine sounds for the Class 40 are already set to max in game but you can increase the volume of the files with some sound editing software. There is a small program on here called DavDecoder (UKTS_18204) which you can use to convert the .dav files in game to .wav files which can then be modified and then convert them back. It's quite simple but can be a bit time consuming when there is a large number of sound files to do.

The sounds set by AP are supposed to be enjoyed at a higher, if not full volume than normal. Not too sure why they have done this, maybe it's to prevent the sim from dumping or gives better quality

Thanks for the reply, I will have a look at doing that.

Thanks for the reply. That seems odd, if you turn the sound up to a higher volume then surely everything else will get louder and still drown out the 40?

Yeah unfortunately, I would say some would drown out the loco?

If you have been on a 37 at full bore, or even worse with the hydrostatic fan running, come to that with a 47 on full bore, you will know why the sounds aren't set at realistic levels. In cab sound on a real 47 peak at around 96-98 decibels according to a survey done in the 80's when noise damage was a hot topic. Deltic drone didn't just apply to the loco noise, for some drivers it was something they had to live with in later life, although I believe that some of the mitigation put in place once the problem was realised did reduce this. Most simmers wouldn't want realistic sound levels, but having said all that a little bit more volume would be nice on most of them.
