Well, I installed the very much updated Nvidia driver, but same problem. Whether I set TS on highest or basic I still get the same 14 fps. Any further ideas would be most appreciated. Many thanks.

Hi Mojo. Just a thought.
Have you been into the Nvidia Control Panel, Manage 3D settings, Programs, to see that Railworks64.exe is listed for use. The default is for Railworks.exe (32.bit) so if you are running 64.bit it may not work as it should.

Hope this helps somehow.

Hi JP. You almost got the star. In fact Nvidia was set to Railworks exe. Great, changed to TS64 exe, fired up, still 14 fps at low setting. Ah well, the search continues. Thanks for the pointer, I will watch out for that in future, if I can work out what is going on. Cheers.

Going further, I went back to Resource Monitor to see if I missed anything. The CPU graphs show little use, but in the top one, CPU Total, a blue line peaks and then stays at the top of the graph. I understand the green lines show usage but I couldn't find reference to this line in the Help section. Can someone explain it to me please? Thanks.

The blue line is the max frequency of the CPU reached

Just what do you have running?

I wish I knew! I go offline, switch out Malwareabytes and Windows Defender, while using the Asus GP Tweak programme to switch off background services. This had always worked in the past. Looking at Resource Monitor it still shows the blue line at 100% but the cores don't show much activity. As far as I know, using MSconfig and Autoruns, only Windows Defender and Malwarebytes are set up to run at startup. How would I find what is working in the background? I have run scans to check for virus/malware etc, but all clear. Frame rate continues to show 14 fps. Funnily enough the sim runs smoothly even at that rate, but the graphics leave a lot to be desired.

mmmm….

There's no need to run Malwarebytes all the time, certainly not alongside another security package though Windows Defender wouldn't be my first choice.

Possibly a bad idea. Many background services are merely loaded, but not actually running and using system resources. That's an integral part of the Windows NT core, so disabling them all can/could lead to Windows trying to load them but prevented from doing so forcing it to try again...and again....anf again......end result is that more resources are used doing that than actually letting it run.
Try it with those Background services enabled.

Thanks Gary. Will try that. I looked at Windows Experience Index. Previously it had registered 7.9 across the board: now both graphics and gaming graphics have dropped to 6.7. Does that have any particular significance?

If you are worried about Maximum Frequency" in RESMON - just ensure you have a good (gaming) power setting in Windows 7 and Check that CORE Parking (Google) is turned off.

Hi, I had something very like this problem about 2 years ago, train sim ran like a dog with 2 legs frame rate at 14, terrible lag. I tried all sorts of things but could not get rid of it. checking the downloaded files via steam did not cure it. in the end if remember rightly I totally uninstalled the sim and redownloaded it after safely saving the contents and asset folders. then deleted everything and redownloaded the game from steam. and put the assets and contents back, This cured the problem for me. It up to you if you want to try it. Good Luck.

Thanks elkay. Looks like I might have to do this as I think I may have found the problem. When I change the settings in sim it gives you the option to restart; you say yes. I'm restarts, runs like the proverbial dog, low frame rates etc. The load screen is so fast and small that I can't see what version it's loading. However, if I say no, then close the sim, then reload, I get the prolonged start screen, confirming that it's 64exe. The GPS are in the 40s but the scenery is shimmering a lot, which it didn't do before. I need to confirm whether the settings have been saved when I've altered them, and rebooted. I followed peterhayes advice Re code parking. Managed to find and change the item successfully, but resource monitor still shows the blue line at 100%. However, there is evidence of more activity across the other cores. Will continue to investigate to get the scenery more stable. Cheers.

Resources monitor tells you everything you need to know about what is going on in your pc.
As the name implies Resources monitor can tell you about any of the areas of the pc one by one, if you have a problem it allows you to turn off certain programs to see if that will eliminate any bottlenecks, it will NOT allow you to turn off anything that is essential to Windows operating properly.

https://www.ghacks.net/2017/12/28/a-det ... tor-guide/

Will tell you more.

It sound as if you have something running that is hogging resources and creating a bottle neck as opposed to a program not working, (that usually means it would not be running or would crash the pc anyway)

Its starting to come back to me now, are you using TS raildriver and joystick interface?. it was something to do with that. the way it was running. try disabling it and see what happens. I am an old codger and my memory aint what it used to be.

Hi mojo.
When you go through "Settings" and you have to do a re-start, TS ALWAYS re-starts in 32.bit mode, that seems to be the default mode.
If you want 64.bit you have to close TS and re-start again in 64.bit.

Hope this helps.

Thanks jp and elkay. Reading up about the blue line in resource monitor it seems less significant if the cores are not showing any activity. I do use a raildriver but no joystick. I tried TS without rd but had the same issues. However, if restarting after changes to settings defaults TS to 32exe. then that would be the answer. I can't remember any mention of that before. Thank you for confirming it. As I hardly ever touched the settings after setting them to high then this particular issue had never arisen. Will default myself to closing and reopening ts after changing settings. I presume it should retain them? Cheers.
