I noticed on certain sections of the track there are these lights/reflectors on either side of the mainline tracks.
What is their function?

Re: WCML South - Track Lights
They are there to provide illumination for regular or urgent track maintenance or repair where the time taken to rig temporary lighting would have an impact on the working time of the possession. Usually installed at busy junctions and only lit when required. The Thomson interactive WCML Trent Valley route also has them.

They are a pain in the real world when you are taking pictures
Crewe station seems to have a lot of them
