The first job should be making sure your Win10 registration is activated, https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/hel ... 0-activate. Ideally you the status to be "Windows is activated with a digital license" as then you don't have to hunt around for the licence key.

I'd suggest you consider using one of the SSDs for Windows and programs, the other for TS and the spinning drive for your documents etc. That way what benefits from fast disc access gets it.

At the moment, the latest version of windows 10 (2004) has a bug that affects SSD drives and it is defragging AND trimming them WAY to often and it is causing users problems. Advice given is to disable the optimise automatically option till it's fixed - hopefully soon!!! As I now have an all SSD system I am a tad concerned about the damage done.

I have a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD that the game was on which I might put in
But can I do that if it has no operating system on it?

Easy enough to disconnect the Spinner and change cables around but I'm unsure

Conspiracy theory yet again. :D
WINDOWS 10 does NOT defragment SSD's it only applies a TRIM command that frees up space that is otherwise blocked due to the way SSD's work. It is not WRITING to the SSD in the true sense of the word. TRIM supposedly extends the life of a SSD!!! :) Most SSD's can have a huge number of WRITES before they become defunct so I doubt that a few Windows write generates will affect them very much, TRIM can be scheduled in Windows 10 - I have mine set to weekly and ver 2004 hasn't changed that.

Hi Peter, actually no. This is a known bug and is causing it to "forget" that it has trimmed the drives so does it over and over - and yes it does it on my machine on all 3 SSD drives - it also tries to defrag them as well on startup. I investigated after it kept telling me that they had never been done just after being trimmed!

This is why, if you have Win10 Pro, it's worthwhile delaying automatic updates---then you can check for issues before allowing them to be applied.

That would be ideal for the OS, and as a clean install entails starting with a drive with no OS on it there's no problem---you'd be booting from the USB stick that has the installation routine on.
That spinning drive would/could then be used for your documents etc, freeing up a bigger drive for programs, keeping things nice and clean and having a dedicated OS only system drive.

Mark
It must be idiosyncratic because it is not happening on my machines (3) all on ver 2004.
You can actually turn off any drive that you don't want it to happen, just untick them in the app.

Hi Peter, it isn't an option with mine. I'm using home and the std version - not using any insider builds. All 3 of my drives are SSD so any bug affects all of them!

So having installed Windows 10 Pro fresh on a SSD I can not run the game because it says MSVCR100.dll is missing
There are some old posts but nothing recent

I looked in those G:\Steam\steamapps\common\Steamworks Shared\_CommonRedist folders but I have sub folder that don't have files in them
vcredist has a 2010 and a 2015 folder and both are empty

Thanks Alan,

After installing the files Steam did not wish to play.
I though if I uninstalled the Steam Client then reinstall it might work
But having clicked Uninstall I had to bomb it out with Task Manager as it was deleting files
When I reinstalled Steam decided to reinstall everything including those items I had unticked in the DLC section

It seems to have removed other stuff too
A short scenario I made from Liverpool St to Stratford last month with the AP Class 86 and Mk1,Mk2 stock now has no stock when I try to load it
All the Carrear Scenarios have become that again so I will have to make them Standard.

It will be a bit until I can run something properly

And now when I get to the Drive/Build etc section I am seeing stuff in the Steam Store :-?
Can I turn that off?
Never had it before and don't want it

At the risk of upsetting folk...

Which bit of
Go slowly...deal with one thing at a time
did you miss?
The whole idea was to formulate a strategy for a "fresh start", have measures in place for if problems arose.

The Railworks are sat on a SSD which, along with the others was disconnected for the upgrade
So I have the computer running
Next step was to add other programs, Firefox, Thunderbird, graphics programs, media player, Nvidia etc.

I was happy the computer was running normally and I got around to Steam - one of the last things to install
It downloaded and installed ok on the G:\ drive but it fell over with the dll problem
Alan put me back on track with the download from Microsoft.

I could start the Steam Client and I tried to click on Play but it showed running and then stopped before the start screen had loaded
So I tried to remove and reinstall but it decided to remove other, Non Steam items for the Assets folder
I stopped it quickly as it was running in Alphabetical order

I then reinstalled Steam and I had to wait because it wished to reinstall everything
Fortunately because the Assets folder was there it was fairly quick but it also decided to give me all the routes, mainly US & Canada, that I had removed via Manage you DLC
Even so that was 20 mins

So I'm looking today to see what I need to put back from my backup

I'm sure you will tell me I should have done this and that but hindsight is 20/20

No need for hindsight; you were given the foresight before you started...
Go slowly...deal with one thing at a time
take a few days getting to grips with the base OS before banging stuff on
