No sound with TS2020 64 bit and Win 10

Post by jackbuzz »

Having just bought a new pc and reinstalled TS2020 I find that I am having major problems trying to get the 64 bit version to run with any sound at all. 32 bit works fine. After many hours of researching the problem I am little wiser. Running setupaudio.bat doesn't help. On two occasions I have got it to work. First, I tried copying OpenAL64.dll from my backup and I had sound. When I quit TS and restarted it I had lost the sounds again. Today I tried verifying files. The first time I started TS 64 bit it had sound. On exitting and restarting it I had lost the sounds again. I tried copying my backup file but that didn't work. I have tried renaming the OpenAL32.dll as the 64 bit version but it didn't work. I have re-run setupaudio.bat no end of times but no joy. I have tried running as administrator and compatiblity modes but no success.

The main differences between what I had before and now are that I had a Win 7 sysyem with a SB Audigy card and now I'm on Win 10 with Realtek onboard sound. When I got the pc a couple of days ago I let windows do all the updates it wanted and am running build 1909 18363.720. I've run out of ideas! Is there anyone running win 10 latest version, using onboard sound, who has sound with TS2020 64 bit?

Cheers

Hi Paul, I'm win W10 and TS2020 64bit, not had any sound problems. But then I’m deliberately on v18xx on both my pc because of advice about drivers for v19xx installs

A check on Goo-goo brings up these useful links and the last one is specifically about Realtec

Other things to ask
Can you get sound from your music, is YouTube Ok or is this defo a TS2020 associated problem?
Good Luck John

Thanks for the reply, John. All other sound functions are fine, as far as I can tell. Media player, youtube, etc. are all ok. I know there was some trouble regarding sound and TS2020 when it was released but I thought by now things would have sorted themselves out. As I said I have had sound with the 64 bit version of TS but then it disappears the next time it's run. I'll have a look at the links you sent.

Yes, many times. And to no effect, unfortunately. :(

Try this:

https://kcat.strangesoft.net/openal.html#installing. Under downloads, download openal-soft-1.19.1-bin.zip and extract the contents. Within that folder is another folder called bin and inside that folder are two folders called Win32 and Win64. Rename both dll's OpenAL32.dll and OpenAL64.dll respectively and then copy them to your RailWorks folder and overwrite when prompted.

I have followed your instructions and (fingers crossed) I think this has solved the problem. I have managed to start TS2020 64 bit three times on the trot and have had sound each time! I'll do some more testing later. Thanks very much for the help.

Cheers

ahunter1984 - thank you so much for pointing to this. I had installed the AP Class 86 and the sounds were almost non-existent, horn intermittent and inaudible on exterior views, and the other ones that were there were barely audible. I replaced the TS dlls as per your instructions and the transformation is remarkable. :D
