Any thoughts on best settings for an i5 6600k with 16gb RAM??

Your weak link is that GTX660 - how much VRAM? 2GB?
What is the resolution of your monitor?
What motherboard do you have?

Simple but expensive
Still use nVidia cards and use enhance all AA settings RW64 in the NVCP.
The new Image Sharpening feature in NVCP can help.
As I say in the beginner's forum
GSync is excellent and some of the later FREESYNC monitors now are GSync compatible and work with nVidia graphics cards. (Google Freesync - GSync compatible)
Standard Monitor QLED or OLED are great- chose fast response time and at wide screen format at least 144Hz.
Curved is excellent - more immersive and 32inch is the sweet spot. 49" awesome.
Go for the highest refresh rate - not necessarily 4K - 1440 is the sweet spot. The higher the refresh rate the better the image.
1440 you will need at least a RTX2060, RTX 2070, RTX2080 super better and so on.
4K RTX 2080 super or TI.
Use only Display Port slightly better than HDMI 2 at this stage.
Best to not limit FPS on a Gsync monitor - counter productive and use FAST Sync in the NV Control Panel.
Run in windowed or borderless mode.
Use Process Lasso to set the affinity mask better than windows.
Always experiment what works for me may not work for you.

Which driver does this come with? I`m running a fairly old driver and have heard the latest does not have the NVC.

The driver version I use is 442.19 and the image sharpening may only apply to some nvidia cards.

I've just installed 442.19 and have played around with the image sharpening feature - for me it's an excellent enhancement.

Wasn’t planning to upgrade graphics card at the moment, but conscious the my other upgrades have relegated the GTX660 from best / newest component to oldest...

But, on the basis that I might, then looking at the prices of the cards ^^^ they are absolutely nuts !!!

Which begs the question about where the best bang / buck sweet spot is - RTX 2060???
And given the similar pricing how does 2060 Super stack up against 2070??

The RTX 20xx cards are desirable, but, as you say, very expensive.
On the other hand, my 27" G-Sync monitor runs quite happily at 1440p on a GTX 1070,
which is older but considerably less costly.

Didn’t have the info to hand before, but native monitor res is 1920x1080, so that rules out the benefits of the higher spec cards

Not necessarily a higher spec card could still help at that resolution. It is certainly worth a try!
My recommendations were aimed at what type of card you would probably need to drive a monitor with 1440 or 4K resolution.
