Animated people & environments done well...

... well, brilliantly actually

Ok, so TS isn’t likely to get the investment of TSW (or DCS...), but it would be great to hope for this level of immersive environment at key locations - esp busy mainline stations

Kill the framerates in either sim, wouldn't it? But I agree that sort of detail would be great especially if you applied it to Network Rail workers on lineside and station staff.

That is amazing. Wonder what spec of PC you need to run that at full tilt. But fair play to the devs, that is some excellent work
Spec: Ryzen 3800X, 32gb DDR4, 250gb Samsung Pro, 2x256gb M4 SSD, WD Green 2tb HDD, MSI GTX2070, Gigabyte Auros, BenQ 35EX3501R

.......and of course any promotional video ever made shows real time, in game action--no clever tweaking of video sequences or creative editing at all...........

Good job we're not gullible, isn't it?

No gullibility exercised here - clearly a promo vid, with excellent editing / production...

However, no reason to believe this isn’t in-game footage. From previous vid clips it’s been clear that ED have put an awful lot of thought and dev work into the deck crew animations

None at all, but...(if you'll forgive the editing of your post)

...so how close to what we'd actually see do we believe it is? The question has already been asked, "what level of hardware is needed to produce that?"--does the average TS user have that kind of equipment?

Nope, but also we're not seeing many animated, interacting, figures are we?

Anyone tried this sim in vr?....its an incredible experience. Hopefully dtg will implement vr at some point, it really does transform the simming experience.

I think this example in DCS has one significant advantage over TS.. it's an aircraft carrier in the middle of the sea.
Imagine a TS/TSW station with this level of detail, animation and interaction - station staff talking to passengers, going about their business, realistic passengers arriving and wandering about and then boarding trains. Now imagine the camera pulls back and the station is in the middle of.. nothing. Just a flat landscape, no other buildings, no trees, no scenery. The track goes nowhere once it's passed the end of the platforms.
The scope of railway routes and the requirement for a LOT of surrounding scenery is a very significant factor.

DCS does look lovely though :)

As an aside, I've often thought about creating a TS diorama.. a small area (like a station or work yard) with an INSANE level of detail - hi-res textures, lots of animations, stuff you can get the camera within inches of and it would look amazing, but it would be like a very small model railway diorama - and just see how far TS could be pushed.
The reasons I've never done it are: mostly time(!), but also if I did it people would then ask "Well why can't a whole route be this good?!" and the answer would be because I'd used all of the available resources for an entire route in one tiny area!

Some interesting thoughts...

Regarding the “isolated” nature of an aircraft carrier vs the “connected” nature of a rail route - I’d always (perhaps naively) thought that most sims were coded similarly...?

i.e. assets outside of visual range are modelled in the “sim engine” and only assets within viewing distance are modelled in the graphics engine... most flight sims will still have an active environment away from the players immediate vicinity. Some of these will be scripted / triggered as a scenario progresses, the best though are fully dynamic with multiple friendly, hostile and neutral assets going about their business.

No matter how good the animation gets in TS2020 you can bet the passengers will still wander on the lines!

Just remember that is a "preview video". If Train Simulator is anything to go by, the end result will not be able to achieve anything near that quality. People get hyped up by things like that, can't wait to buy it, and then moan on forums as to how disappointed they are . . .

. . . and materialise out of thin air next to your cab at station stops!

My railway photos are now on Google + - links to the albums are in this thread http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 9&t=149558

Lots of steam and early diesels from 1959 to 1963.

Me too, I used to make 00 station models with trains running round in circles, like you I have thought of this for TS since [RailfanMode]
They did one on the Japanese TV Rail program "Railway Journal"
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/japanrailway/
Which is also on Sky in the News on Thursdays.

Nice idea

That might be more marketable than you think. There seems to be plenty of enthusiasm for micro layouts in the model railway world: loco yards, parts of docks, even a short industrial siding in OO sitting on an ironing board that I once saw at a show! They had limited operating potential, but the owners seemed quite happy spending all day doing short shunting activities. Maybe the same holds true for TS?
