7MT (Brit) Chiltern scenario

Post by ttjph »

Afternoon all,

Who's played 'Steam to Marylebone' on the Chiltern Main Line?

Has anyone managed to start the Brit (+ load 11 I think) up the 1 in 54 out of Tyseley? I had to let the train roll back to the bottom of the hill and charge it...

(If you're rolling / sliding backwards in forward gear, does the loco actually respond to the 'reverse' sander? I don't suppose you can actually lay sand on the rails as you roll back ready for pulling forwards, as you might in real life...)

I don't recall having any issue getting started in that scenario?

But I can test it again for you. It might be a few days before I will get round to it though.

Cheers,

Giving it a try now. You are correct it is impossible to start the train where it is. You have to let it roll back until the gradient is not so steep then you can start going forward. I suggest you do this from the onset of the scenario as you wait for the green signal otherwise you won't make the first station on time. Also not marked on the F4 track guide there is a 5mph speed limit just after the signal as you cross all the points. I shall drop JT a ticket about this. :)

I've just tried it and got moving from the start without any problem. I put the sander on, reverser to 75% and 45% regulator. I got caught out by the 5mph speed limit though! Just to add I'm running the 7MT in advanced mode and have installed version Install_BR7MT_110.exe the update from 2017.

I'll check my version tomorrow, thanks; and try with those control settings. Maybe I was being heavy-handed...

Yes, having got up the hill the 5mph caught me out too! I found another unmarked restriction (I think) entering Banbury.

No way can you get it to move at 45% regulator. You need just about full regulator because as soon as you take a bit of regulator off from 100% you start rolling backwards. I have just tried it. I have the latest version and also have Steam Sounds Supreme sound pack which doesn't affect the performance of the 7MT. I am also operating in advanced mode.

I think I've found the problem.

You must have the cylinder cocks off/closed when starting. If I put them on/open then the loss of forward power does indeed cause you to roll backwards. Try again with the cylinder cocks off and 45% regulator and let me know how you get on?

I have no idea if this was necessary in the real world when pulling off from stationary on a steep incline? Certainly I've noticed in the game that forward power is much reduced with the steam locos when the cylinder cocks are open, it's not just the JT 7MT.

Maybe someone out there can enlighten us?

I wasn't a steam engine driver in the real world but from what I have read the idea of having the cylinder cocks open while moving from stationary is to drain the excess water that builds up in them while the loco has been stationary failure to do so can damage the cylinders. Some models of steam locos I think from Vulcan Productions and Victory Works model this and if you don't have them open on moving off the scenario well end after about 1 minute saying something like cylinder damage failure to open cylinder cocks.

Just Trains replied to me about this and made a small video of them driving it and getting it moving but alas without the cylinder cocks open and as far as I know is not the correct procedure for moving a steam loco off from stationary you are meant to have them open. Yes with them closed you have more power. JTs video. https://justflight.sharefile.com/share/ ... a9f9143e2a

When I tried I had the cylinder drains open (I'm well trained, me!) but the limiting factor was adhesion - I had enough power to get the wheels spinning (unless I closed the drains when it wouldn't move forwards...). I wonder if there's a sweet spot with the drains open too.

I actually completed that scenario successfully by letting the train roll back to just past the white building on the left where the gradient isn't so steep and starting from there with the cylinder cocks open.

Email from JT. "The developer of this only partially modelled this on the 7MT, but no longer works for the company and so we are unable to make any changes to this.

The way that I showed in the video will be the only way to make the loco move off on this hill."
Or as I have done reverse the train to where the gradient is not so steep.
