Help required.

I run Railworks across three monitors. But one unfortunate thing about this ,is, when a pop-up error window appears during a route/scenario loading. I cannot really make out the description, i.e ,the resolution means the characters seem to merge. Differentiating 0,8 5 etc troublesome. Particularly when Lat & Long figures are being displayed.
Now, in an attempt to try and improve the visibility, tried altering the resolution settings . First attempt didn't he;p and on the second attempt my troubles started. When the program started the re-start procedure the screens went back to desk top. On trying my desk top Railworks shortcut exe, was informed "the item Railworks.exe" this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so the shortcut will no longer work. True enough on looking into the Railworks folder the Railworks.exe is not any longer present. A search of the drive railworks is on for the Railworks.exe come back blank.
Looks to me that the program on trying to restart has dumped the exe file. Checked recycle bin and it's not there.
Any ideas how I can get the program to start and if it's because I've selected an illegal resolution. Where can I alter it outside of the running program?

Resolved. But only after I had spent most of the day doing long needed BUps of Asset/Content/Manuals and an additional payware folder. Whilst doing the BUps tasked the computer with doing a search of all drives for a "Railworks.exe" file. It took 3hrs but found one on a Railworks backup done in 2015. Suffice to say after all the above had completed. Copying and pasting this back into Railworks and then doing a restart of Railworks, much relieved when it eventually booted up.

In the future, it might just be easier to have Steam do an integrity check of the installation which will fix any missing files. Though it is very odd that the Railworks.exe file would be removed. That is not a normal thing - meaning it would have taken specific action on your part, or by some tool you used to erase the .exe file.

I run triple monitors (5760x1200), but never had issues reading fonts from error messages. Then again the error you describe is not something I've encountered before, so I'm not saying anything useful I guess.

I saw some of your other posts about issues with the Windows 10 update over Christmas and changing over to nVidia, trying to get triple monitors to work. You have had some unlucky problems. It might just be that you need to wipe the disk and install Windows 10 new from scratch. I think you said you have an 8 year old PC (which isn't horribly old, but it has history), so I assume your Win 10 install was an update over Win 7. Anyway, Windows tends to corrupt itself over time and cause all manner of odd problems. The solution, as I'm sure you know, is to re-install from scratch. However unpleasant that may be, it should run much better when done.

for the advice. But I was w'out my computer for approx 2 months over XMas. Eventually my son put me in touch with a lad who used to have a computer shop and was some kind of a whizz kid. Suffice to say, he sorted me out and did a completely new install of Win10 on a new SSD which he talked me into buying.So to summarise the OS is on it's own solid state drive and is a new installation.
Yes my machine is 8yrs old, but being Alienware Aurora and to me costing heaven and earth. I'm having a helluva job convincing myself to fork out another four figure sum to play a 32bit game on LOL.

if you use the anti virus programme Avast, and you did not exempt Rail Works.that when running a scan can remove the RW EXE. in puts it into it's vault. you must get it to exempt RW and also get it to restore the EXE. I don't know if other anti virus programme's also do that but worth being aware if your exe gets removed.

JohnT, got it. I misunderstood that your computer was already reinstalled from scratch with the Xmas Win10 install. Glad to hear it.

dingerb, the comment about a virus program quarantining RailWorks.exe certainly could do it. Though I can't imagine what in Railworks.exe would flag a virus checker. Has that been an issue for some people? Specifically with Avast? Just curious.

Just read your reply and sure enough that was the problem. When the new drive and other things were being sorted out. The guy doing it didn't like using the AV which I had,i.e Bullguard. So in the rebuild installed Avast. Even though my Bullguard was the full paid up version. In Avast I can see how to get it to restore but not how to exempt Railworks. Think I've sorted that one, go to scans\Full Virus Scan and click settings-scroll down to Exclusions (LHS Menu) -click on browse and select path to file(s) you don't want interfered with.

Many thanks for that info - was beginning to worry new drives were playing up.

J1o2h3n4,pleased that I was able to help.I had a feeling this would happen to someone.
it took me a bit of work, to figure out what had removed or was blocking the exe.when the same happend to me.why it flags the RW exe, I don't have a clue.
