Wheels out of place in OR

Have you given it a go? Post your experiences, particularly things that worked well. Let the team know what works and doesn't work as they cannot test the software with every combination of routes, activities and content available for MSTS. OpenRails is actively being improved and is quickly approaching v1.0. This is a great place to discuss what you can do with OpenRails.

Wheels out of place in OR

Post by davemarvin »

I downloaded the Skipton Carlisle 1920 route and stock yesterday, mainly to get some of the locos. Everything is fine in MSTS, but in OR v1.2.3766 a number of the Midland locos have their wheels out of place as in the screenshots below. If anyone can offer any help with this, I would be very grateful.

That is an interesting problem. I haven't seen this problem with these specific locos, as I may not have run them on OR before.

All 3 work OK in MSTS.

Taking each in turn in OR -

0-4-4T 1208 is faulty in OR - yet its 'mate' 1204 is OK

4-4-0 compound 1005 is faulty, so is its mate 1033, yet 1010 is OK

0-4-0T 1509 is faulty, so is its mate 1502

I've had the problem of 'displaced wheels' occasionally when I've been building models - in my case it is where I've moved the stock forward or back from its original central position WITHOUT resetting the axis to origin - in that case the wheels and bogies are offset by the amount I moved from the centre. It was easily fixed by resetting the Main axis back to origin.

So, in this case there may be a problem with the original 3D model centres and their corresponding parenting and axis centres - this can only be fixed by the original author in TSM (or whatever he used to build the model) - however, having said that, they work OK in MSTS - I wonder what differences are in OR that would cause this problem that doesn't exist in MSTS - strange !!!

In the case of the 0-4-4T and 4-4-0 compound it may be possible to take a copy of the good working shape file, uncompress the file, then manually adjust the texture names to read the correct textures that applied to the faulty model - however, this method is complex and unless you know what you are doing, it is very easy to stuff it up.

Thanks Brian, I think I'll live with the problem in OR. It was really the two L&Y 2-4-2Ts in the Skipton stock that I was after to run on your Huddersfield route, and these are fine in OR. Then of course I couldn't resist having a look at the rest of the Skipton locos.

This is a problem I have seen before (notably with some 08 and 09 diesel shunters). Before messing with shape files, I would download the latest experimental version of OR (X4081) and try again. No need to overwrite your 'stable' version 1.2 if you want to keep it for some reason. Just place the experimental version in another folder.

Hi Gentlemen,
1204/1208 and 1509 display correctly in Open Rails X4081

Success! Thanks very much Martin and Ged for looking at this. I have downloaded OR X4081 to a separate folder, and all the locos are now correct in that version. Would you advise using X4081 instead of v1.2 from now on? I notice the drop down box for Activity in X4081 now has an extra option for 'Explore in Activity Mode'. Can you say if this is any different from 'Explore Route'?

Thanks again, Dave

Although I keep ver 1.2 on my hard drive, I haven't used it for ages. I would stick with the latest experimental versions if I were you - a new version appears most Friday evenings. OR is a WIP, and this is the best way to keep up with developments. Such as - 'Explore in Activity Mode' - which allows a path to be 'driven' in 'autopilot' mode, and with random weather effects etc.

My only suggestion is that I also run the latest Monogame version (available from Elva's Tower) This is so much faster, even on a reasonable set-up, and I suspect it will become the new standard pretty soon.

Hi Dave,
The stable v1.2 was released more than a year ago and there have been a great many enhancements, improvements and bug fixes since then! There's not usually much wrong with the regular Friday releases, so I recommend you keep up to date, at least until v1.3 is issued.

Sorry, I can't help with the "Explore in Activity Mode" as I've never used it.

Cheers,
