Stainmore Loco Announcement

We have some good news and some bad news. Lets begin with the good.


As seen in the picture, Digital Traction will be supplying the LNER Holden E4 locomotive to the project. These 2-4-0 tender locomotives were built for the Great Eastern Railway from 1891, and classified T26. The GER was absorbed into the LNER in 1923. From then, they were classified as E4. Although 100 were built, only 18 survived at the outbreak of WW2. Six E4's were allocated to the NE area of the LNER network. These were mostly used over Stainmore, with cab side modifications made to help protect crews from the tough winter weather over the line. They lasted until 1959, gradually being replaced by more modern types, which brings us to the bad news................

For a variety of reasons, too many to relay here, the Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0 is no longer going to be included. We have tried many different avenues to move the loco build forward, each coming to a dead end. It's a harsh lesson to all involved, ourselves included.

But on the positive side, the route is almost complete!!

Pleased to read that the route is almost ready. Hats off to Ben Yates! But I am not really happy about the exclusion of the Ivatt 4MT at all and the Holden E4 was only on The Stainmore from 1935 -1942...............so way off my time period unfortunately.

I was very disappointed that we had to bail on the Ivatt 4MT, but the state of the project when it was passed to us was not a viable to pursue. I kept going and going as much as I could with it and it fought me every step of the way, until I finally realised it was going to be an incredibly time consuming battle I would never win. It would be better started from scratch. I had hoped it was an opportunity for Forge to finally have our names on a finished loco, but clearly it wasn't to be.

The E4, while it does only fit in a short time period, is definitely going to be a fab loco. A bit off the wall compared to the Ivatt, but I'm sure it will be enjoyed nonetheless.

Sorry about the Ivatt loco has been cancelled but I have checked and found West Auckland had a allocation of BR STD 4 and STD 2,and Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0',so I suppose a DT one of these loco's could be used on the Stainmore Route

Until 1954 Stainmore was RA2 but it was relaxed and RA4 locos allowed. After 1954 to closure the mainstay locos were G5, J21, J25, LM 4MT 2-6-0, LM 2MT 2-6-0, BR 4MT 2-6-0, BR 3MT 2-6-0, BR 3MT 2-6-2T, BR 2MT 2-6-0. The only other loco of note to traverse Stainmore were two Q6's light engine to work out of Kirby Stephen.

I would love to see both the BR 3mt's.

The E4 looks lovely and I am sure will be fun driving it over Stainmore. I am very much looking forward to this route.

The Stainmore route doesnt actually have a set time period as said by Ben Yates, its period to LNER and BR.

If you purchase the route you can run anything that you care to but I want to run in the BR period.

You probably will still be able to run it in the BR era,there are the DT 4MT,and 2MT 2-6-0,locomotives you can use

I'm quite looking forward to getting the 2-4-0, it will come in handy for the Cambridge and ECML route.

Maybe when SSS give more details about what stock is included with it,I,we will be able to judge whether it's suitable for BR era.

I have a feeling that there will be another steam locomotive included with it

Just looked up Holden E 4 and found out the last one was withdrawn in 1959,although that might have been from Cambridge ,they were used on Cambridge to Mildenhall trains

If you look at the render, it's got a BR Numberplate on the front! Surely that's enough to tell you some made it to BR?!

Pretty sure it was from Cambridge - I remember going there and looking into the shed from the main platform to see it.

Just seen the colour screenshots on the DT Farcebook page: The E4 looks Stunning! I just hope, at some stage, they offer it in original GER condition, with the original cab.

Last week DT hinted on Facebook that "This will be only the Stainmore Cab one as per specification for now, but it certainly wont be the last on this you hear of the T26!'... Six E4's were used on the Stainmore line between 1935-1942 and given new cabs in 1936 to cope with the Pennine winters. After 1942 they returned to their familiar GER haunts. I know which route I'll be using this on,that is Cambridge and East Coast Mainline,I'll use it on Cambridge to Mildenhall services along with the new GN non corridor coaches,although though they are technically wrong,should be Great Eastern Coaches
