JT Manor steam generation
Playing a scenario using the JT manor Class with SSS soundpack using auto fireman.
The boiler quickly drops to 146lbs no matter how carefully I drive. It stays there even after coasting , periods of very light shunting etc. To me the steam generation rate seems far far too low. I cannot see how boiler pressure would not recover when engine doing hardly anything for reasonable periods. Where in the bin file is this stated as I was going to have a tinker.

Re: JT Manor steam generation
Sounds like a failure of the auto fireman to me to properly fire this engine... What of trying to manually fire it?
Can you raise sufficient steam that way?

Re: JT Manor steam generation
One thing worth checking - I have the 5MT and 7MT from JT and on both of those, you need to disable the normal auto fireman in the game menu. Once you are in the game there is a keyboard control to enable a scripted auto fireman that a lot of JT steamies use. It'll tell you how to do it in the manual.
The reason is that some of the scripting used in the locos is incompatible with the default auto fireman so JT developed their own. Hope that helps!

The Manor's don't yet have that custom scripted fireman!

Re: JT Manor steam generation
As said by others, manual firing is key with the Manors. Also, just double check you have the damper doors open to help raise steaming rate.

Re: JT Manor steam generation
Dampers that don't start fully open keep catching me out on the 7MT! It steams much better once I've opened them all the way.

Re: JT Manor steam generation
The Manor is difficult to fire at first
I always fire the engine and don't use the auto fireman
Notch the engine up quickly to the minimum
Keep the cut off short and regulator at minimal openings until slow speed
Use the dampers
Use the E key when you notch up (seem to ignore the reverse setting without the E key)
When you start the scenario start firing and keep at it the more coal the better 90% plus works
Keep the water up around 90% plus
The blower works at stop but is very tame and best to use only when the regulator is off
The blower bleeds steam as well so limited use
The other big thing is the ejector valve for the vacuum brake
Use the J key to turn on and the Shift J to turn off
Create the vacuum and set the brake to run then use shift J and turn the ejector off
Bleeding steam kills the engine
You need to keep searching for the best cut off to regulator setting and ensure the brake ejector is off
Keep it in the green with coal water regulator and reverser
The engine improves as the fire heat increases so gentle with the regulator and minimal cutoff when you start
You will see the fire respond as you stuff it with coal
All the engines have there own quirks and it takes a while to find how they respond
Everyone that buys the Manor asks the same question as it is a frustrating engine until you work it out
It is an older model that needs a serious update but fills the smaller 4.6.0 void and a classic Western Engine

Re: JT Manor steam generation
Thanks for all the advice. Did remember the dampers but need to check the ejectors etc.
I dislike doing manual firing as everything gets so frantic and to be honest you simply cannot do it all well.
If it need manual firing to work will give the loco a miss in future and even gently steaming on auto fireman destroys the boiler preesure - even at a standstill boiler pressure does not increase at all once it reaches the minimum which is frankly ridiculous no matter that you are using auto fireman

Could it be the SSS add-on causing the issue?
I run the JT Manor without this pack and it maintains boiler pressure OK in accordance with the manual?

Re: JT Manor steam generation
Interesting Point pH I have never tried the loco without the SSS add-on
When I say manual firing I am still using the HUD and for water and coal
I just control when you add
Speed keys for the ejector as this engine needs the ejector off ( Just remember to hit "J" before braking as you can't release the brakes without the ejector)
The rule is little and often is better
The water generally is added on the downhill slopes to keep the boiler from blowing off
Long climbs will require water but if the fire is up the water can be added without killing the boiler
Keep the coal up and wait a bit then add the water, try never add together
Stick with manual method as it is rewarding once you get hang of it
Firing might seem frantic as you still have to watch the road and adjust to suit the gradients
The reward is a great trip working hard and keeping the boiler under control
Beats the start stop of a diesel any day (The sound is awesome slogging up the bank with a good load)
Cheers Aus

Re: JT Manor steam generation
The Manor can be driven successfully with the auto firemen in use, just remember to operate the dampers to obtain the steam required. I've climbed the gradient from Evercreech Junction to Masbury and the safety valve was lifting at Masbury.

Re: JT Manor steam generation
Same, had a drive last night with the manor with SSS pack, dampers open, regulator in the roof, and had it wound down - could't keep her quiet at the valves.

Re: JT Manor steam generation
The manor is one I have trouble with, I always forget about the dampers (a tip I only recently discovered). Will give it another try with some of the driving suggestions. It is an old model but looks good and the SSS sound pack really enhances it.
I always use auto fireman, which I know is not always the most efficient, but a driver didn't do both on the real railway and for me it is unrealistic to do both on the simulated railway, however I can see that some enjoy both aspects and enjoy doing both.
I do have an interest in firing, it is a shame you can't choose to do fire whilst AI drives.
Maybe eventually is TSW we will be able to.

Re: JT Manor steam generation
If using manual firing stoke the fire up to 90% which gets you enough Steam. Once moving if on a level track 22% regulator and about 40% reverser should do while maintaining steam and increasing speed. Yes I know manually firing is not realistic but I prefer to do it that way as you have better control on the running of the loco like filling the boiler when you want. This is with the SSS enhancement pack.
