So then - in cab loco sounds, again...

Post by rkk01 »

I have recently enjoyed Locomaster Profiles "Silver Bullet Syphons"...

Unless the video is mixed with an external mic feed, then a 37 cab is blwdy noisy...!

It is. Hence the 'wired for sound' bit...

...the fact that we can drive class 37s on our digital train sets---they might be a lot blwdy quieter, but we can drive 'em. Yeah, it has no real significance if you want to keep the forum purely for TS things, but neither has any post where somebody slips off the focus of discussion with something along the lines of "Won't have time to check that; I'm away on my hols tomorrow---a blwdy well deserved break by the sea", when "Won't have time to check that, away from home for a while" is the TS relevant part.

It's usually the case that the mods jump on things like this and do a bit of strategic moving of non relevant to TS topics to a relevant forum? Are all the mods on extended leave?

So am I right in thinking that sitting at a computer desk in the average living or whatever room doesn't sound exactly like a class 37 cab, would I also be right in thinking it doesn't smell the same either?

Surprised that the relevance seems to be lost on people...

There has been lots of discussion over the years, on whether the exterior vs cab sound levels are realistic on TS locos / add ons.

Personally, I enjoy those TS locos that sound like they're being thrashed every time they are opened up. Sometimes that means opening the virtual doors and widows ;-)

The point of my OP, was that watching the above ^^ cab video, it was very striking how noisy the loco was, especially pulling away and grinding up the Devon and Cornwall banks - very much in contrast to the frequent comments on here that realistic TS cab sounds are much more muted.

Now, I realise that the windows were open for the sound recording, but I also asked whether the "wired for sound" concept for this series of cab videos also mixed in sound from an external mic - hence rendering comparisons with TS cab sounds irrelevant :-?

ETA - "blwdy" = oft used Wenglish spelling ;-)

Without a doubt, those wired for sound cab rides use an external mic or a mic placed to pick up the external exhaust note.

Maybe 'Wired for Sound' is a reference to Cliff Richard.

The product description certainly gives that impression....
Our "Wired for Sound" series of programmes are a unique collection of ‘sight and sound’ cab-ride videos. Not only do they depict a ‘drivers eye’ view of the route but they also portray the sound of the locomotive hard at work.

Which exactly what I suspected, hence the post / question. To my ear / personal preference, the vid gives a pleasing rendition, especially as cab and motor (?) sounds etc are also audible

Oh definitely! The external sound is nearly always more pleasing to the ear than the internal. When it comes to TS though, realism is the name of the game for me at least. If I want some external thrash, I'm gonna have to stick my head out the window or open the window/door.
