New Computer.

Post by Retro »

With the new Unreal version due to come out soon what sort of machine are we looking at to run this new version of the Simulation ? As I have a GTX 570 at the moment I am looking at the GTX 1070 and an i7 CPU latest version.
Any help advice much appreciated.
Kind regards James.

Welcome back James!!

We're working along the assumption that if your PC can cope with TS2017, it won't have major issues with TSW.

The usual and oft trotted out advice still holds true:

an i7 is more powerful than just about anything else you can readily buy, but the extra expense when compared to an i5 isn't justified for the small performance boost you'd see when playing TS/TSW.
Of course if you have other games or programs that would benefit an i7 is a good choice, but purely for TS, and probably for TSW, not essential.
Likewise for a 1070 GPU---fast as 'stuff off a shovel' but so is a 1060, for less money.

If your budget allows to go that wee bit OTT then i7/1070 is grand, but if you need to save a few quid you wouldn't suffer by dropping back a tier in those respects.
We'll obviously have a much clearer picture once the TSW Beta is released, so I wouldn't be in any great rush to buy.

What are you upgrading from James?.... You may not need a full system at all, just certain components.

Hi James,

That spec is virtually the same as my latest PC which I built about 6 months ago (before the gtx1070 was available), except mine has the i7-6700, (I ordered that in error for the 6700K, so mine can't be overclocked, but at that speed probably does not need to be). I also got 32 gig ram and 2 * 27" plus 1 * 19" monitors which I use for radio experimentation and need all that screen space :-)

With the i7 and all that RAM, I can run literally dozens of programs simultaneously, so the i7 is well worth buying.

My son has a gtx1080 and for games it is really great, but somewhat expensive.

Are UK component prices going up?

I had been holding off from a major upgrade, but the change in $/£ values may sway me to purchase sooner :-(

Hi,
I am keeping the old machine as a spare Gary so that's why I am getting a new one. Thanks for you input Mike. Much appreciated. I am told that most companies are holding prices steady for a short while and not passing things on to the customer yet. I have more or less got this sorted out now so will be getting the new machine pretty soon.
Thanks and kind regards James.

I've no idea if it's offered as an option James, but if it is I'd consider going for a M.2 drive for the operating system to live on---if you're going to go with the latest and greatest (and it's a great spec, no doubt about that) the icing on the cake would be to provide the fastest possible drive for Windows.
Even if that meant having to reduce the size of the other drives to bring it within budget, in my mind it'd be worth it---do you really need 1.5TB of storage?

Hi Gary
I am looking into what you have suggested but am a little confused. The Intel and Samsung Drives are very fast but the Kingston and Sandisk ones seem to run at a similar speed to the Sata 6 SSD's
Also available are PCI -E SSD's which also seem to be very fast.
Kind regards James.

Latest Quote. If I get the Monitor separately I can get the Spec below. I am considering an Acer Predator XB241H bmipr 24-inch Full HD 1920x1080 NVIDIA G-Sync Display, 144Hz, 2 x 2w speakers, HDMI & DP. Any opinions on this monitor especially the G-Sync part. This will probably be my last machine so I have tried to future proof it a little.

What about a Viewsonic VA Series VA2719-sh, 27" Monitor, FHD (1920x1080), HDMI, Black, no GSYNC though. I have had 2 Viewsonics and have no complaints.

Hi and thanks for your reply. I have only room for a 24 inch Monitor at the moment. I have been looking at the IIYAMA GB2488HSU-B2 24" however. Wonder if anyone has tried this one out. Still think of going back to the GTX 1070 as it is a lot cheaper. Still slightly confused.
Kind regards James.
