Missing Files, could someone help/advise

Post by shawster »

Hello chaps,

When looking into my assets folder I have noticed that some of the files for locomotives are missing. A prime example of that is the DTG Rivera line. Hopefully, the pictures below help explain my problem.

In the 1st picture I have gone to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\RailWorks\Assets\DTG\ExeterKingswear\RailVehicles\Steam and as you can see, no files show up for the locomotives.

2nd picture shows the new Corris route, and I've gone to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\RailWorks\Assets\SHG\NarrowGaugePack01\RailVehicles\Steam to look for the locomotive file and . me It's not there.

I should point out this isn't for everything, for example, most of the RSC and other folders can be viewed. An example being the Falmouth Branch where I've gone to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\RailWorks\Assets\RSC\FalmouthBranch\RailVehicles\Steam and the third picture shows clearly that the files are visible.

Hopefully, you can advise me, you're more clued up than I am!

I thank you for your time

Best Wishes, S.

The top two are stored in a newer .ap file format, at the level of DTG\RivieraLine\ there will be a single .ap file that contains everything. This is to make file verification and reacquisition much easier.

The same applies for the Corris route as it is new, but Falmouth was released before this file system was developed so will still show a traditional folder structure.

Thanks for the advice, however, it appears to show up normally for others and are not contained in .ap files? Very strange indeed.

I certainly cannot do any reskinning without these locomotive files and the .GeoPCDX files, so it's a real shame.

Ahh well, I guess I'll have to live with it. Thanks anyway!

Put 2 and 2 together.... the files you need are in the .ap archive, and can be extracted with 7-Zip, WinRAR or even Windows if you copy the .ap out of the game and change the extension of this copy from .ap to .zip.

There's a million and one threads about what to do/how to do it/what not to do in this forum, do a search and have a nice read.

Your screen shot of the Corris assets folder shows you have a RailVehicles folder and a Steam folder inside that----you shouldn't have those with a new install of the route so what have you done to create them?

I have that file structure for some of the "Assets for a route" folders, so it may be some form of default behaviour. eg ExterKingswear!

Thanks for your help and advice, I'll have a look and see what I can find if there are more threads.

As for this, "I" haven't done anything. The second "steam" refers to the locomotive type. Hence 'Steam locomotive.'

No Peter, the default is a xzyAssets.ap archive/file inside an xyzAssets folder---there are no mirrored folders installed outside of the .ap archive.

Ahhhh.....I've often wondered what that Steam and Diesel naming meant...... see above for the reason for my question, you will only get mirrored folders outside of a .ap archive if you cause it--installing reskins or extracting the folders are the usual reasons.
So once again, what have you done?....have you installed any reskins (or tried to) ?.... have you extracted the contents of the .ap for any reason?....have you attempted to run the route/assets through RW Tools?

Would you mind explaining how?
You're not the first, and certainly won't be the last, to get confused with .ap archives so your experience and findings may help others in the future.

I used WinRar to unzip the .ap files, then simply paste over the engine files into the correct missing template folders. Then by deleting the Winrar folders, it now seems to work flawlessly.

Are you now saying the assets wouldn't work/show in game before you extracted the files?

That still doesn't explain the mystery of where the empty folders came from, and whilst it's not the norm I'm not fully discounting that they may be part of the installation designed to aid reskinners by setting up the folder structure--a daft idea granted, more confusing than helpful, particularly if there's no note about it in the manual/on the download page. If you want to use those copied engine files in RW Tools by the way, you may need to remove the Read Only attribute they should have inherited from their parent archive. You can do this at folder level; right click the RailVehicles folder, choose Properties, un-check the square next to "Read only (Only applies to files in folder)" and then elect to apply the change to all file and sub-folders.

Could someone with the Corris route have a quick check to see what folder structure they have, and do the date attributes of any empty folders match that of the .ap itself?

The assets install into /Assets/SHG/NarrowGaugePack01Assets.ap

As expected, all of the files are in the ap archive. There are no sub-folders, empty or otherwise, in the SHG one.

Ta Ash, from that we can conclude (or at least I can  ) that something other than the standard installation routine took place on the affected system.
