Some observations running MSTS on Windows 10

Hello Everyone

Recently I installed MSTS on another laptop, which runs Windows 10. I find that the trains/activities which come with MSTS run very well . I have set my GEFORCE Graphis card as default. But... what I find is when I bring over some of my add ons from my other laptop and install a new one on Windows 10 that these routes don't rung smoothly , they falter somewhat . I would appreciate some feedback from some one to see whether this can be fixed.

Let me add that Train Store runs well. I have run the existing trains with Open Rails , but problems again with other routes and a new add on.

Hi Father Ed,
It could be that your graphics card is a little lacking.

Could you please post the specifications of your PC? CPU, amount of memory (RAM) installed, Graphics card number, Operating System and where MSTS is installed (internal or external drive) and its installation folder.

Here are the specifications :
Asus sonic master
Processor: Intel (r) Core (TM) i5 421iu cpu@ 1.70 ghz
Videocard:Nividea Geforce 820m
Videocard 2: Intel (r) HD Graphics family
RAM 4GB
Operating system MS 10 ( Build 10586) 64 bit

MSTS is installed as follows c:\\Train Simulator, this is then the internal drive.

I have a feeling as you have indicated in your response that the Videocard might be a bit on the light side.

As your PC is a laptop, there's not much you can do about the graphics card, but it is an entry level version and I think will have problems running MSTS satisfactorily. This is based is testing several NVIDIA and AMD cards over the last couple of years.

Although you have 4GB of RAM, the graphics card can use up to 2GB of it, which leaves only 2GB for Win 10 64-bit, which is its minimum requirement.

Have you installed the latest drivers for the 820m? If not, I suggest you do, because the drivers supplied by Microsoft with Win 10 seem to be very basic! Get them here : http://www.geforce.co.uk/drivers

MSTS requires DirectX 9.0c to be installed, but Windows 10 doesn't include it. If you haven't installed it yourself, get the installer here : https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/downloa ... px?id=8109

I can't guarantee that updating the drivers and installing DirectX 9.0c will make any difference, but think it'd be worth trying

I have followed your advice re the graphics driver and direct x 9.0, but no change.
What I have noticed is that all of a sudden Open Rails does not work anymore.
Any thoughts on that?

Is it better to give up the idea running MSTS on this laptop ? Somewhere I read that for MSTS you need Geforce FX5950? Is that correct ?
But you already said that in my case there is not much I can do.

Further to my last postings...I confess that I don't know too much about Direct x 9.0 { although since we exchanged posts , I did a search for it }, when you download the file , it gives you the options to choose a location. I did not have a clue where to put it, so created a temp file for it and ran the .exe , I believe it ended up
under c:\\windows. Can you confirm that this is the correct location?

I managed to get GeForce updated with the latest driver.

As I said since I did the downloads there are some changes - first of all Open Rails does not work anymore, secondly when I run an MSTS add on , it is still slow , but the program does not allow me now to offload passengers, i.e. pressing the enter key.

Don't know what to make of it really.

As I haven't used this pc a lot , when installing the GeForce driver , the pc asked for Java to be installed. As I have Java installed on my other laptop, I agreed to that.
Have I done the correct thing here ?

I'm not technically minded, but, I see that your CPU is only 1.70 GHz, I wonderd if this is too weak now, MSTS of course is over 15 years old and possibly the newer models are a bit more resource hungry than before. Can you overclock this, unsure if the other techno geeks might chip in with some better advice, the only other suggestion if you have the funds is to upgrade to something with a bit more ooooomph.

Thanks for your response. Until I get a further response from Ged, I am really unsure what my next move should be.
MSTS is running well on my Lenovo laptop ( Windows 7 32bit ) and 2gb of ram ( which does restrict me a little bit )
cpu strength is about the same.
