Help!

Post by wild5551 »

I have this problem. Today I was playing MSTS as usual, everything was running fine, then I downloaded a route, and then all of a sudden a box pops up saying: 'Failed to find gui.sms file'. Then the route loads, again with more missing SMS iles, and then when I'm in the game, it freezes. It was running fine before and it suddenly started. Please help!

Could you list all the steps you took up to getting the message that gui.sms could not be found?

I downloaded the route, then ran the installer, but it copied into the main MSTS installer, I had forgot to make a route file for it. Then I re-ran the installer, with it's own folder. Then I loaded MSTS, and the error message popped up.

Hi,

Slightly puzzled by what is going on here!

You say you installed the route without creating the folder first and then created the folder & reinstalled.

Did you do anything else between the installations?

If you browse to your main Train Simulator folder and navigate to the Sounds folder within there; can you actually see the gui.sms file?

I'm now reinstalling the game, to see if that works.
gswindale, in response to your first question, I also downloaded MT Springfield as well. And after all that I deleted them both and downloaded NWE v3. I only got a sound folder with that.

Hi,

If you are reinstalling; make sure you manually remove any route folders before reinstalling - MSTS by itself will leave anything that it didn't install behind.

When you reinstall; make sure that the main MSTS folder looks something like
msts_main.JPG
And check that the sim loads with the 6 default routes.
Then add any new routes 1 at a time; checking it runs each time.
If you then get any problems; come back & we'll pick up on them one at a time.

Hi Everyone, I've been looking at this topic since it started and Wild5551 has not stated what operating system is being used and where MSTS has
been installed.
As most people know that using anything other than XP, MSTS must not been installed using the path starting with either the C:\Program Files or
C:\Program Files (86) and must be installed using the instructions on the Steam4Me.net site.
The downloader for the Glasgow-Carlisle V4 is set to the normal XP default Path and must be changed depending on where the MSTS is residing, if
no folder is used then all the 42 Files that should be in the main MSTS Route folder GLAS2CAR end up wherever the path has been changed to and as
such un-usable by MSTS.
The gui.sms file is in the Main MSTS Sound folder for use by any Route that is installed into the MSTS Route folder.
