Hi folks
I've not used the scenario editor before as my PC didn't seem to like it. Since upgrading the graphics card, I thought I'd give it a try.
On opening either a new scenario, or an existing one by other authors, the 'start' screen looks rather odd;

This is Wharf station on Talyllyn - the scenery looks to be substantially disarranged, though when moving away with arrow/ctrl keys the terrain appears Ok. Opening other scenarios on other lines doesn't seem quite as odd, though there's still the coloured 'netting' effect and other items around.
Is this normal? I'd not be surprised if I've got some setting incorrect. I've reinstalled the Talyllyn route, cleared cache and verified the files - I was, apparently some 1321 file short. Restarting PC/Steam/game hasn't made a difference. If it's relevant, system is Win7, I5, Nvidia750Ti, 12gb Ram.
Thanks for any observations/advice.
John

Re: Scenario editor query
It is a bit startling, isn't it? Thankfully, it's nothing to worry about. The editor can show you the distances involved in all sorts of features, the main one being the markers for sidings, platforms and so on. The netting shows the range for sounds and they are a pain if you don't need them visible. They are easily removed from view, though. Move your mouse pointer to the top left-hand corner of the screen and a fly-out menu should appear. One of the icons looks like a computer monitor. Click on that and a second fly-out will appear on the right-hand side of the screen. Look for an icon that looks like a speaker and untick it. The netting should disappear.

Re: Scenario editor query
Aaah, OK, thanks for that. Didn't look right, but I guess there's a lot of potential detail to come to terms with.
Onward to my next challenge! Thanks again

Re: Scenario editor query
Hi John; you're not the first, and certainly won't be the last to read "x files failed to verify" as "x files don't actually exist on your machine"---files can fail to verify if the operation times out before it's completed, an overloaded server or slow internet connection can be the cause of that. The important thing is not to panic about it!john13 wrote:verified the files - I was, apparently some 1321 file short.
A verify is really the "next to last, last resort"---it's nigh on a re-installation so you need to be sure it's what you actually want, or need--if you'd modified any default files (AP soundpacks for example) you'd have to re-install all of those. As you'd not used the editor before you had no idea what the view would be, so finding out if there actually was a problem should have been the action to take. Once again, don't panic if things seem *odd*.....just ask in here.
Re: Scenario editor query
Agreed - it is just that you have all your scenario view elements turned on. They are sort of global settings so once you have it set up for how you like it the sim will remeber the setting. I tend to have all the markers turned off unless I am at that point in route building. For scenarios it can sometimes be useful to have things like siding and platform markers turned on as you can check to see that you have selected the right marker. F6 and F7 keys will show the names of the markers and any stock you place which can also be helpful.
The other bit to be aware of is that on the Talyllyn a new scenario will sometimes start below ground level in Towyn - which is why you can't see the scenery. It is more obvious in practise than when described. Just point your view at the sky using your mouse and the move forward and you will re-emerge into a typical bright warm sunny rain free Welsh afternoon....

Re: Scenario editor query
Thanks for the explanations and advice - much appreciated. Having tried in the past - prior to upgrading my graphics card - my PC would stop as soon as the scenario editor appeared and refuse to respond at all. No error message, and needed to be powered down and restarted, so I was concerned that something was amiss.
I can now move away from the odd starting point OK and the editor appears to behave reasonably so some progress made.
Thanks again
John
