OR Editor?

Have you given it a go? Post your experiences, particularly things that worked well. Let the team know what works and doesn't work as they cannot test the software with every combination of routes, activities and content available for MSTS. OpenRails is actively being improved and is quickly approaching v1.0. This is a great place to discuss what you can do with OpenRails.

Gotcha.

I'll check out this editor now my PC is back up and running, but the wait for an OR specific editor will go on.

Being able to convert old MSTS routes into OR-only and upgrade them at same time is something I'd love to see.

It is possible to "upgrade" a route to OR only standards in that OR seems to handle lots of shapes on a tile with no problems and TSRE5 has a virtually sky high limit on the number of shapes it can handle on a tile.

If Goka is monitoring this forum, I would like to know which maps he is using in the map overlay. The reason is that the map in my area shows the line of old mineral railways that were closed nearly 50 years ago, along with the rail tracks that are still in use today. This is tremendous, since long abandoned sections can be recreated easily by laying tracks over the map. The only worry that I have is that access to these maps is through an internet connection, and they may not be available before I have chance to model all of them.

The maps are here: openstreetmap.org . The maps include huge amount of data, but not all are visible on default layers.

That's very interesting Goku, Thanks. It is even better to be able to see these in the overlay in your editor.
Cheers, Geoff.

I have made a decision that I am going to give this editor a serious attempt this time. I have moved to a new section of my Lake Geneva route where there is only track laid and will set about laying some scenery.
My first impressions are very positive.
I currently have v0.6191 and it is set so that from the desktop shortcut I am straight in to the route. So a big plus here.
I also like the blue bounding box that appears around an object when it is selected, much better than the MSTS edge outline. Also I very much like the panel which appears on the left giving file name, position and Qdirection.
Most amazing of all so far is the copy/paste rotation and the rotate 90 degrees. How much time have I spent editing these values in world files, followed by open/shut route editor. This is great.
I also like the way an object is moved about, drag it with the mouse and it slides along the ground, up and down slopes.

One thing I would like to see is the object I am about to select turning red. Where there are several object close together or overlapping I have always found this very useful.

Well done Goku

I`m glad you are getting on well with TSRE5 Garry. I suggest always using the latest version (currently v06.43) as Goku is very active in bug fixing and new features. Latest addition is a measure device which is a marvelous help to making models to fit your route.
Best wishes, rick

Hi Rick
Thanks for pointing out this later version, I am downloading it now, only 17 minutes to go!!!!
I thought I had the latest version, but it was the one at the bottom of the list, and I see they are not in date order.

Hi Garry,
I am downloading it now, only 17 minutes to go!!!!
Did you really mean 17 MINUTES! If so, I don't envy you your internet connection.

I've just downloaded TSRE v0.644.exe in about 10 seconds; I'm sure you also need to download the preceding zip (v0.634), then replace the TSRE exe file with the latest version. The zip file took less than 30 seconds to download.

By the way, I'm not using a fibre internet connection, just the old copper wire version!

Cheers,

Hi Ged
17 minutes is what it said, but we know better than to believe what computers tell us!! I left it for a while and went back to see how it was getting on - "Download interrupted" was the message. When I resumed it said 50% and 1 min 30 sec to go. That was version 0.643, I am currently downloading 0.644 - about 2 minutes. Followed by 0.634zip to get the latest additional files.
What I think happened is that Windows 10 was conversing with the boys back at base and anything I wanted to do on the computer came well down it's list of priorities.

My broadband speed is usually about 1.5 Mb/s which is pretty good at the end of 5 miles of cable, the connection to the house looks like aluminium! My neighbours who are an additional 400 yards away struggle to get 0.5 Mb/s.
The OpenReach website is promising fibre, it is in the build phase which typically take 5 months, and it has been saying this since March. I have also been told that the website tells lies and I wont get anything, the notices on the BT poles about the coming of fibre stop about 1 mile from me, then the cables go underground for about 1/2 a mile and I think this bit is too difficult to do.

I shall wait and see.

I have just found a problem and don't know what to do about it. Without changing the route at all, but just by installing an update of the editor I have found that the blue outline on my platforms has changed, but this has not happened to any other objects.

Click the image to zoom in

This image shows a platform selected, this is using v0.6191.exe with folder v0.6144.zip.

Click the image to zoom in

This is the same platform selected using v0.644.exe with folder v0.634.zip. The blue outline is different.

Click the image to zoom in

The final image shows another object selected. The blue outline remains the same in both versions of the editor. I have tried placing several other objects and it appears to be a problem confined to ones that I have built, but not all are affected.

Any thoughts

Just been reading through the pages on Elvas tower.

As the new editor can add tiles to MSTS routes and tertex the tiles then it must be creating them using the Goode-Homosline (if I can spell that) projection.

Still not clear about how the new editor creates tiles if you start a new route. Presumably it still works the same way which would result in changes in mileage and gradients for UK routes. Does anyone else know if it is possible to create a route that would be closer to real world in projection - with right angled T junctions and approximately correct distances and gradients.

I am hoping eventually that there will be an editor for open rails that has a more ellipsoidal representation of the world. (Even if it will only create new OR routes and not allow for editing old MSTS routes because tiles are different...)

Somewhere in between was the new thing for MSTS RE that let you get distances and angles correct for a route... but because of choosing a point to match global coordinates in the MSTS system means than routes can not be joined and the further you go from said point....

Not sure if this makes sense or if anyone can give a simple answer.

Meanwhile many thanks to Goku for enormous hard work!
Regards

I have just looked over at Elvas Tower and see that this bounding box mismatch was reported in September. I have posted the results of my tests over there and repeat them here as well.

I have now traced the first time this appeared.
v0.629.exe in v0.618.zip works fine
TSRE5.exe in v0.630.zip has the problem, but if I put v0.629.exe into this zip the bounding box matches the object.

I hope this helps your development of TSRE5. I intend to hope this will not prove to be a problem later on in my route, and continue using the latest version.

Hi All,
I'd really like to know how the OR Route editor is coming along as I'm toying with the idea of starting again on a route i was doing some time ago.
I notice Elvas Tower seems well and truly locked down so how would someone get a hold of the editor anyway?

Kind regards
Tim

The editor is always available at http://koniec.org/tsre5/data/

Be sure to choose the latest version.
