OR Editor?

Have you given it a go? Post your experiences, particularly things that worked well. Let the team know what works and doesn't work as they cannot test the software with every combination of routes, activities and content available for MSTS. OpenRails is actively being improved and is quickly approaching v1.0. This is a great place to discuss what you can do with OpenRails.

If you have MSTS/OR installation on C drive, most windows installations won't allow to modify these files by non admin applications. Solution: run TSRE as admin.
I have found an anomaly with OREditor -- it does not like files with non English characters.
It was bug in old version, fixed some months ago. Always use new version. (newset is 0.625).
Use official RE thread in trainsim.com or ET to get help.

Re: OR Editor - first impressions

I have been trying out the new editor. Very impressed! I have been able to move things around quite intuitively. This is going to be game changer for msts and open rails - quite literally.
Great work!

I don't visit much these days so forgive me if it's been mentioned already...

...but are there any instruction/tutorial videos showing the new editor in action?

It'd be nice to see someone else messing about with a route without having to do so myself (PC I use for MSTS/OR out of action for moment).

Wow!! This looks so much better and easier to use than MSTS's Editor even though I don't normally do any route editing. Thanks to the team for all their hard work.

Looking Good. I have just installed TSRE5 and it seems to work well.

However, how do I activate a blank tile, ie allow terrain to show and objects to be placed? MSTS used a world editor to activate tiles.

Making new tiles is easy.
1) Just navigate over a space in the "white void" (a blanks space) and press B. Admire your new flat tile!
2) get your hgt data and put it somewhere convenient
3) Find "settings.text" that came with the TSRE5 download
In settings.text edit the geopath point to your hgt data files. save.
Mine is geoPath = C:\msts_support\mstsUtilities\DEMEX. `cos i used to use DEMEX but TSRE5 is miles better!
4) In TSRE5 fly to your new flat tile. select tools/geo .
5) click on the ground, then on RHS panel <load height>
6) click <load height> and click on the ground
7) A pop up window appears. click <load> at the top.You should get a greyscale image of your terrain relief
8) close the grey scale window, and your terrain should appear.
Just compare these few steps with the hassle of using RGE, and Demex!
You can also use the steps 4-8 to repair voids left in existing DeMEX terrain. ( you may have un burry your tracks so make a backup)
I think this is the right place for data

Look for the uk about N50 E0 or N50 W1 a long way down the list.
Note also at stage 6 <load map> will put a map layer on your route. Not quite google earth, but pretty good all the same! Thanks Goku!

Thanks Rick. I will give this a try. Hopefully a lot easier than MSTS as you say.

I have a few arears where there are no tiles Settle Carlisle. This doesn't show in MSTS but OR's greater viewing power shows the white void!

In MEP most of my tiles are already in, but its good to know it should be easy to add some more if necessary.

Nice video.

I have one question if anyone can answer it.

If you edit a route in OR, will that mean it no longer works in MSTS?

My advice Niall is to make sure you have a back up before editing with the OREditor.
I have found that going back to MSTS REditor after using OREditor sometimes, but not always,s throws up an "unable to read tdb file" error.

Always have done anyway, Garry. The unreliability of MSTS route editor made me get into that routine!

As Garry says , make backups. I too have had rare cases of tdb failure after editing with TSRE5. I think some decorative parts of my signals are being saved as sub objects in the tdb. I need to investigate more.
But TSRE5 seems safe with scenery, terrain, tracks, roads, sounds, level crossings, and some signals. For complex and linked signals it might be best to return to MSTS RE. RE seems dreadful after a TSRE5 session!
It is quite feasible to switch between the 2 editors, but TSRE5 is far superior. 30 route miles added in TSRE5 to date and very few problems.
Niall and Mick, don`t forget to check out the .kml marker feature!

Forgive the questions, I am not able to keep up with what's going on these days but the OR Editor is something I have long been interested in.

As it stands, is this OR route editor simply a replacement for the MSTS version or does it offer any new features you can't get in the original?

By that I mean does it offer any new things (random examples, AWS/TPWS neutral sections) which would make the route OR only?

I'm just wondering what the future is. Are we going to eventually just have to build new routes in OR or will we be able to retro fit MSTS routes and turn them into OR-only routes?

Hope that makes sense.

First of all TSRE5 is not an OR route editor, it is a replacement for the clunky MSTS RE and is still a WIP. Having said that as shown by Rick a bit earlier it is a superior product in many ways, and the video shows how easy it is to use.

The other issue raised is old MSTS routes and an Open Rails only route editor. There is nothing firmed up yet on that front, still needs details hammered out to form a "blueprint" for subsequent action.
