OR Editor?

Have you given it a go? Post your experiences, particularly things that worked well. Let the team know what works and doesn't work as they cannot test the software with every combination of routes, activities and content available for MSTS. OpenRails is actively being improved and is quickly approaching v1.0. This is a great place to discuss what you can do with OpenRails.

Fact is that most of the discussion of TSRE5 happens on the Elvas Tower Forum and that seems to be the place where the author answers questions. For us, Elvas Tower unworthy individuals, that means we can't reach the author and no questions may be asked. That triggered my initial suggestion, to collect info on a more accessible forum like this.

Addendum:Just saw the development on Elvas Tower that some JKY character has reappeared on the scene and is most obviously a very much disliked figure. It seems, Goku has chosen the wrong companion, at least for Elvas Tower oldtimers. How do they say : the plot thickens and the future is most uncertain. I hope that doesn't leave me with the old MSTSRE, I'd have to drop the whole hobby again.

It is not that anyone is deemed to be unworthy of Elvas Tower membership, it is just that JKY almost took down the site last year, having already caused another forum and file site to close. He also chooses to host payware and other files on his website making them freely available to all who want them, clearly in violation of any published EULA associated with these files.

Therefore to protect site integrity and the files that are uploaded there, membership applications are severely restricted.

The lack of documentation is being addressed and worked on. As for a delivery date of the documentation, nothing set in stone. There is also a suggestion to include a readme with each version identifying changes, updates and bug fixes. With updates coming so quickly, it's tough to stay up to date.

You can access the web site for the Route/Consist editor here: http://koniec.org/tsre5/

And updated builds here: http://koniec.org/tsre5/data/

I have decided to give OREditor a trial, as MSTS RE is playing up again. I have just restarted my Lake Geneva route and I have only 2 world tiles but still RE crashes at the slightest provocation!!

I have TSRE5_v0.6132, launched from a desktop shortcut in administrator mode.
I can open my route, select a building, and move it to a new position. But when I try to save "Route/Save" nothing seems to happen. Close and reopen the editor, and my building is in its original position, so route changes are not saving.

Has anyone else had success with this?

Hi Garry,
With respect, if the MSTS RE objects to a 2-tile route, it suggests there is something wrong on at least one of those tiles. TSRE5 is a WIP and probably also objects for the same reason, but doesn't yet have a full error-trapping/reporting system.

Cheers,

Goku has changed the licence of his route editor TSRE5 to GPL V3, ie it is now open source, Below is his post on Elvastower....

"The software is now licensed under GPL v3 license.

Sources here: https://github.com/GokuMK/TSRE5

How to build using Netbeans:

I. Download and install Netbeans.
II. On Windows: Download Tools: http://koniec.org/tsre5/data/tools/

5.7.0 is static build of QT 5.7.0. Download and extract to
C:/QT/Static/
It has to be this path because it is hardcoded during compilation. If
you want put it somewhere else, you must build your own QT from
sources or download and use dynamic build.

Download MingGW if you don't have.
mingw530_32.zip for build, MinGW.zip only for msys.

On Linux all should work out of the box. Just create new configuration in NB.

III. Get sources and build:

1. Open Netbeans.
2. Click "Team->Git->Clone"
3. Enter repository adress: https://github.com/GokuMK/TSRE5.git
your login and password for github?
4. Next, ok ...
5. Enjoy playing with source code!

To build app you will probably need to edit configuration.
1. Right click on TSRE5 -> Properties
2. Build -> Manage Configuration -> select Release and click "set
active" button and press ok.
3. In Tool collection you should have MinGW_QT_5.7.0_Static. If you
don't have, click the [...] and make new like this:
http://i.imgur.com/j6FgS6Y.png

Click "Build Project" button. "

End quote.

To build a native LInux version only requires Netbeans (Netbeans is Java based intergrated development enviroment) to be installed and a new profile created.

Hi Ged
Thanks for the reply.

I have now deleted the world tiles, plus the .rit .rdb .tit and .tdb files and their backups. So I have a totally blank surface to work on.

I can place new objects in OREditor and save them. They reappear when I restart the editor. But if I select an object, and move it, then save. When I restart OREditor the object is back in its original position.

My problems with MSTS RE seem to occur when I adjust terrain height. If I smooth out the edges of a cutting or embankment, I get the dreaded "not responding" on the top bar, before it all shuts down.

I`m sorry to hear that some contributors to this thread have problems with their own MSTS/OR installation.
But this should not be allowed detract from Goku`s new editor. It is an astonishing achievement, and exceeds anything MSTS route builders could imagine. Shame on you all for being so negative! I hope the author doesn`t visit here!
In case I seem like a fanboy, let me highlight just a couple of features
You can generate xml text markers from Google earth, and see them in TSRE. With 4000m visibility, track laying to your imported markers, is a breeze. I think it is possible to import maps as well.

Having laid your track now fit an embankment under it. With MSTS RE, this was so tricky route builders would laboriously hand edit world files QDirection. Then with a tiny edit window and 640 resolution, you would still find a gap under the track.
With TSRE you can make objects stick to the track, with perfect alignment. TSRE runs in high resolution, and at last you can actually see what you are doing.

You can paint directly on terrain with very fine resolution, using your choice of .ace or jpeg texture. Even the payware Mosaic program couldn`t match this.

There are many more features I haven`t discovered yet. And if this weren`t enough Goku has also included an excellent consist editor.
There is enough documentation to get started on the Authors site http://koniec.org/tsre5/. It isn`t fair to expect more while the program is still in development
So please let us appreciate Goku`s brilliant achievement

Hi Rick
All these features are great, but if I cant save my route after doing all this then it is pointless. I hoped that by writing about this problem on the forum that someone would say "try this, then try that", or even "Garry you are doing it wrong".

I have abandoned my MSTS route (3 years of play) and I am looking to start again, and Goku's editor seemed a way forward. But until I can get it to save it is no use to me.

I've just had a go with the OR RE and after a lot of fiddling trying to work out what buttons to press I've successfully moved objects (not track or road) about a (very) small test route.

Hi Dennis
If you go to the webpage
http://koniec.org/tsre5/
and scroll down to "How to build Routes " there are instructions to follow.

Perhaps I should've added that after pressing the save, exiting, and looking at the route in OR the objects I'd moved were in their new locations.

Garry, I think Ged has given you the answer : something is wrong with your 2 tiles. I have some dodgy tiles in my route, and they crash TSRE5. A long time ago my track strayed onto some double sized tiles. Although I then split them in RGE, there is a remaining problem with them, and they still haunt me and ORTS!
If you only have 2 tiles, you won`t lose much by starting again : I wish I had. It is a bad idea to leave hidden problems with MSTS
The best bet is have a test route. Back it up and then you can hack it about with TSRE5.
I have just discovered TSRE5 has some very slick terrain shaping tools. But the MSTS RE wire frame view is best for final smoothing close to tracks. Also MSTS RE is better at connecting elevated tracks : TSRE5 tends to put the track piece on the ground.
I`m developing a style of hopping between TSRE5 and MSTS RE to use the strengths of both. But I still maintain TSRE5 is a brilliant development! I`m not finding any trouble with saves

I CAN SAVE!
Also my Lake Geneva route may be in recovery.

I have done a database rebuild as recommended in the MSTS Route Building forum "Track Database Problem?"
http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 0&t=145786
I had done this before but without changing the route start tile. Now I seem to be able to do things that caused MSTS RE to crash before, and I can save changes to the route in OREditor.

Looking forward to exploring OREditor some more.

I have found an anomaly with OREditor -- it does not like files with non English characters.

I use a file Anhänger_Strezek.s (a trailer for an articulated truck -- it makes sure there is enough clearance under a road bridge). OREditor does not display the object, and when it saves it records the object in the world file just as far as the problem character -- Anh . When the route is opened again it ignores this entry, but MSTS RE throws up errors when opening.

I have changed the Shape files and the .ref file to Anhanger_Strezek.s, and have searched the Shapes folder for " ä " and changed any other files it found.

Strangely this character is displayed without problems in the Objects Ref file drop down menu on the right.

Just a minor thing to be aware of, and easily fixed.
