Just saw this today... I live very close to Burbank, the station at teh top of the route. Too bad it doesn't go north; the drive from here to San Luis Obispo is one of my favorites, and the train line runs right along the freeway.
The F59PHs aren't too pretty but they sure beat the Genesis... when those first came out I heard that a pair went off the tracks and into a field, earning them the nickname "mud missiles".
Had the pleasure of almost being run over by a Surfliner F59 in Santa Barbara. Those engines sure are big when they are bearing down on you.

As in, pics of the actual route? Err, not scanned. But perhaps I will snap some. It's not the busiest line, I'll often make the 4-hour drive without seeing a train, plus with all that California coastline (not to mention the occaisional bikini-clad reveler) who's got time?CaldRail wrote:Any pics worth seeing?

Forty odd years ago I was at Vandenberg AFB, training on Thor IRBM for the RAF, when the launch of a missile had to be delayed whilst the train carrying Mr Kruschev from San Francisco to LA was hurried along, as if such a thing could be done with US trains. The line ran between the launch pads and the main base.autonerd wrote:As in, pics of the actual route? Err, not scanned. But perhaps I will snap some. Ive got relatives who live an hour from the US border in canada: Providing I can persuade my girlfriend to come on a "Chuff-Chuff" (as she calls them" holiday I hope to get over on a cheap fllight to Canada, and travel over to use the AMtrak all line pass. (Very good value for money). In fact, I have the entire Amtrak timetable here, which is rather small (!)
It is a dream to go coast to coast tho....
