Class 483 - Trailer Cars - are there actually ANY ?

Post by ka959 »

To any of my "Learned" friends... do you actually know if there any Class 483 Trailer Cars in existence ? I thought I saw one somewhere, but can't be really sure if I did, or not. I think it might have been in the SWT Livery - again, not sure either. I'd just like to know for sure, as I wish to know for sure if there any ! Some reskins, perhaps ?? But WHO & WHERE ? Thank you for any troubles, by the way !

Regards...

Re the class 483,they are ex London Transport under ground trains, when London Transport retired them, the sets were split, some driving motor cars were sent to the Isle of Wight, and the trailer cars were scrapped, the 483 actually replaced some older Pre WW2 underground trains, which were used on the Island line when it was electrified.

Hi Jim, not any for the 483 as there weren't any but there are trailers in this pack.

Hi Jim
As you live in New Zealand I wasn't sure how much you knew about the railways on the Isle of Wight, that is why I mentioned that the 483's were not purpose built for the Island line, the 483's are two car sets run in pair's.
The biggest problem now is finding a replacement for them as they are probably 60 years old,and London underground haven't got any redundant stock that can be cascaded down to it.
Normal main line Emu's are to large for the route.
So the answer is there are no trailer cars to both, the real sets and the TS 2016 sets

Hi Darren
Thanks for the link to the Original ex London Transport sets,I can remember them on The Piccadilly line when I was growing up in the 1950's,those and aircraft wise the Boing Sratocruisor, the Lockheed Constellation,The Bristol Britannia.
I'm getting old now,I can even remember food rationing, the last of rationing was 1955,we were probably more healthy then, than nowadays

Great trains the 1938 stock; I recall travelling to work on these in the late 70's/early 80's when the Bakerloo went all the way to Watford Junction - they were at that stage over 40 years old but still looked pretty original, aside from silly white LRT logos in place of the elegant gold underlined legend London TransporT and a slightly lighter shade of red......

None of this nancy-boy half-life refurbishment for the 38's, they just kept going, efficiently and sturdily!

I always thought it odd that the 1959/62 stock were not considered as potential replacements for the 38's; perhaps they were - I know that the 38 stock transferred to the IOW had been given an overhaul in the mid-80's, perhaps it was considered that the aluminium 1959/62 trains would be harder to maintain than the steel 38's but that is purely conjecture on my part....
